"Aunt Alice gains weight at the wiff of a hot muffin"

This is from a guy named Dr. Gregory Ellis:

"Calories Count! The Energy Balance Equation is weight control’s
Golden Rule: its Ultimate, Irrefutable, and Holy Law. Calories
consumed cannot exceed those burned without gaining weight. The
myth of the “fast” and “slow” metabolism that varies widely from
person to person -- is just that, a myth. It’s a myth that Uncle Harry
“eats everything in sight and remains slim.” It’s a myth that Aunt Alice
“gains weight at the whiff of a hot muffin.” Resting metabolism depends
on body size and we can predict it by a formula; we aren’t that
different. Any large differences in the amounts eaten only come
because one person is far more physically active than another. The
Law is always obeyed. It’s unbreakable. All are accountable. No one
escapes; no one is above the Law. This is the First Principle, failure
to learn the Law will lead to failure in bodyweight regulation. “But,”
you say… there are no Buts!"

I just felt like postin something...and so thats what I did. :)

Ha! My ex didn't even have a job and I used to come home to find him in the same position I'd left him in, only surrounded by crisp and biscuit wrappers, and he was as skinny as a rake!

I just think that too many times we like to use the mentallity of a "slow metabolism" as an excuse...myself included. Maybe there are people out there who really do have a slow or faster metabolism...and maybe it is beyond their control...I think the majority of us just have to make sound decisions, day in and day out, and we will reach our goals.

THANK YOU! I hate it when people say, "oh, so-and-so can eat anything they want and not gain weight". Yeah, because they eat as much as THEY want, not as much as YOU want. You do not know if someone really eats 1500 calories a day or 5000 unless you follow them around seeing every single thing they eat. I used to eat the way my ex did, when he was a 6'2 guy and I am a 5'4 girl...he ate large, greasy meals once a day or so, and I'd eat them too. Guess who gained weight? Me, because I eat more than once a day.

I have both skinny and obese friends who eat "whatever they want". From what I see, my obese friends eat more, plain and simple. It's certainly no value judgement on my part, but to say someone can eat 2312743342347863 calories a day and not gain weight is a fallacy.

I say I have a slow metabolism sometimes, just because I can't eat as much as I'd like to. My maintenance calories will be ~1400 when I'm done losing, that's diet-level for most people. :frown:

Yes and no. I would assume these things work on a bell curve, so there probably are people who can't look at pastry without gaining wait. They're just 0.1% of the population. Also, medical conditions play a role, which is why some people need to cut down on their carbohydrates in order to lose weight.

So you're saying that for the most part, people have the same metabolism? I disagree. Metabolic rate can and does very from person to person. While it may be about calories in vs calories out, that amount of calories is based on metabolic rate.

Metabolism does differ. That is just biochemistry. My sisters can heat up a room a couple of degrees on their own, just sitting on the couch, whereas I cannot even keep myself warm at the same temperature. Where does that heat come from? It comes from them burning energy as they do nothing. It's physics and biochemistry. An extreme example would be comparing the same size animals of different species. On average a mammal has to eat its weight every six weeks and a reptile its weight every six months. Why? Because one produces it's own heat and another doesn't. It's efficiency of the biological system. The more efficient you are in your biological processes, the less you need to eat to maintain your weight and health. Even within a species, the efficiency is going to vary a lot. Excess heat is just one example of wasted energy. There are lots of places in your body where energy can and is wasted and there are going to be people that have more wasted energy (higher metabolism) and those with less (lower metabolism).
