Requesting Feedback - adding songs for my Cover Band

Hey everyone! For those that don't know... I am the lead singer of a cover band in Utah and we play out a lot. We play everything from oldies to newbies... lately, the emphasis has been on the new songs. Normally I go to my RL friends for feedback on songs that we're looking to add, but I thought I'd mix it up.

A few notes:
- Target Demographic is FEMALES, ages 21-30 (if the girls come, the guys will follow...)
- Emphasis on "Dance" or "Party Rock" type tracks
- Original Key or whether artist is Male/Female is immaterial - we transpose, including backing tracks
- We play in a night club with a big dance floor, concept is dance songs but coming from a live band

So... with that....

DISCUSS:

One More Night - Maroon 5
Whistle - Flo Rida
September - Earth Wind & Fire
Firework - Katy Perry
What Makes You Beautiful - One Direction
Tik Tok - Ke$ha
Medley: Animal / Everybody Talks / All The Small Things - Neon Trees & Blink 182

Thoughts???????? GO!

my vote is for the medly, but I loooove neon trees.
I have a friend that has a cover band similar to what you describe, he gets a good turn out focusing on 90s pop. I love when he does My Prerogative, It cracks me up everytime!
  • I once saw a cover band do an awesome cover of "Keep on Rocking in the Free World!" Everyone was on their feet. :drinker:

It's not a vote - we're thinking of adding ALL of these songs. Just want to find out if one (or more) of them isn't a good idea.

Dude can one direction lol, do a Beiber if you are willing to go that low.

Girls like screamo, at least 21-30, and I found alot like more indie prog. rock. I dont know what your band wants to be known for but when my band does covers, we make them metal, even change the melody to them to give it a new flavor.

I think you should def do a katy perry song though, maybe Pink too, "Blow me one last kiss" is freaking catchy. Check out "Madness" by muse, on thier new cd its def my favorite song now!

    Hi
Being in pro audio, and helping out with concerts and shows... And being a fan as well, aaaand a fan of dancing in general..

I think it would be really really good to revive a older disco song... One that might give everyone the feeling that, "Geee I wish I had my rollarskates on." But something really groovy... Hummm let me think on my 10 minute break about which song.. I will come back and let you know the name... Or names if I pick out more than one song.. Okay. I'll be back..

I play drums for a cover band. We try to a mix of everything (Billy Joel, Bryan Adams - Seether, Godsmack), but we play more hard rock and metal than anything. I have found that if it's popular songs, and you sound good, they will follow. 80's metal-pop and today's version Nickelback-3 Doors Down. Those always go over big for us.

Just so everyone knows, we do dance/party rock songs by the following already:
    LMFAO
    Maroon 5
    Pink
    Lady Gaga
    Justin Beiber
    Foster the People
    Rihanna
    Far East Movement
    Katy Perry
    Carly Rae Jeppson
    Fun
    Gotye
    The Wanted
    C-Lo

We also do disco, 80's, newer rock stuff.... but that's the stuff that's the driver for this particular project. My cover band actually wears two different hats, one is a rock cover band and the other is this pop type cover band.

    It's fun :)

One More Night - Maroon 5 - Good, upbeat song. I think it has dance potential

Whistle - Flo Rida - I like this one. I think the ladies will like a song about blowing a "whistle" - chicks are dirty like that.

September - Earth Wind & Fire - good dance song. not sure how it would play to the demographic you mentioned

Firework - Katy Perry - the song was overplayed in general. I'm not sure about adding this one now. It may be a good one for later after it has some time just be.

What Makes You Beautiful - One Direction - no comment because I don't like One Direction, so I am biased

Tik Tok - Ke$ha - i think this is a party song that people will get into.

Medley: Animal / Everybody Talks / All The Small Things - Neon Trees & Blink 182 - yep. i think this one is good.

Wow. Very interesting. If this keeps up we'll add that song.

Tik tok, what makes you beautiful and whistle. You guys have party rockin?
You also need a party song you don't dance to. Switch up the very favorites. I don't want all 3 greats in a row, because well then i'm just exhausted and want to sit. But still listen to party music

Yes, we do Party Rock Anthem, as well as Sexy and I Know It.

EDIT: Good point... and we try to mix in other songs so they have time to go to the bar and get drinks :)

Yes, we do Party Rock Anthem, as well as Sexy and I Know It.

Big Head Todd & the Monsters does a Sexy and I know it cover that we like a lot.

wonder if yours is like that...

The Pink song would likely work well in your demo. Also, have you checked the no doubt new album for anything?

I'm a metal/rock/alternative girl, so I have to admit that I don't know a single one of the songs that you put up there. However, my brother was lead guitarist in a coverband here in New Orleans and they did metal/rock/alternative. They did have a good girl following, but the ones that the girls danced to most that they did were the Smooth Criminal - Alien Ant Farm Version. Also, when they did the Careless Whisper rock version, the girls slow danced with other girls... very popular among the men!

Also, everyone's favorite and EVERYONE danced was Bodies by Drowning Pool, but that might be a bit heavy for your crowd, but it's one of my favorites!

I ain't having a go at you but I don;t see how those songs would target your demographic(very rock and roll by the way) and how they would attract guys to gigs?

Did you even read my original post?

The demographic is GIRLS - and those that would go to dance clubs. You know, the places where they play these EXACT artists?

Good hell. Of course you're not having a go at me. You're just not paying attention because you're in too much of a hurry to NOT a go at me. Stay classy.

And you obviously aren't a musician or have been in a cover band - where the girls go, the guys follow. We're trying to play the songs that the girls want to hear.
