The carb threshold

I think this is something to think about......
Everybody has a carbohydrate threshold, meaning a certain amount of carbs (any kind, simple or complex) that they can eat in one sitting before it gives them a hyperglycemic reaction (high blood sugar) which triggers the pancreas to compensate by spewing out insulin into the blood stream to regulate things which then causes a hypolycemic reaction (low blood sugar) which in turn makes you hungry for more sweets/sugar/carbs to bring your insulin back to a normal level. In conclusion you eat alot of carbs which in turn makes you want to eat alot of carbs This is a wicked circle that we have all been in, often for some....which can seriously effect our health, and especially our weight loss willpower.
For some people, like myself I can have about 20-25grams of carbs in a meal without wanting to overeat and eat junky foods for the rest of the day, are you aware of how many grams it takes for you. I don't think most realize the importance of insulin and how it effects your eating patterns......which is why they created the glycemic index.

Deanea,
Thanks for that. I guess I was getting to that point before I decided to get my act together. The reason I say this is that at some times I would be eating and I'd get a real head rush and kind of dizzy while eating and although tests didn't show any of the usual signs of a problem the doctors talked around a diabetic condition.
I'm not diabetic, thank goodness, but just before I started this effort in Jan my physical showed a borderline high blood sugar level. I will be interested in seeing how the next physical turns out.
I'll have to go out and see how to figure my carb threshold now.

I agree with you Anne. I follow the Paleo diet and research shows that consuming 70 grams or less of Carbs from veggies, fruits and nuts will get your body to use STORED FAT as energy. Why feed your body grains and processed foods for energy when most of us here have enough fat stores to get the job done. Believe it or not..people with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes can benefit from a Paleo diet. Grains, processed foods and simple sugars are a definate no no and are the culprit for people becoming Diabetic (Type 2), a need for continued insulin shots for Type 1, cause inflammation throughout the body and of course make u fat. people are led to believe that FAT makes u fat when thats not true at all. When we consume grains they break down into glucose extremely fast and when you have the over abundance of glucose in the blood the pancreas goes into overdrive and produces an abundance of insulin to metabolize that glucose to be utilized by the cells for energy...but the cells can only use but soo much, So insulin, then, stores 720 grams of excess glucose in the liver and muscle tissue (for fight or flight). Now...what about the remaining excess? Yup, they get stored as body fat. So imaging eating grains for every meal. Imagine how over worked the pancreas is from this type of lifestyle. When the pancrease is overworked for the extended period of time for years...will cause a person get type 2 diabetes. Now a person with Type 1 Diabetes, don't produce efficient insulin at all therefore need injections to metabolize the glucose...so long story short. DONT EAT GRAINS AND PROCESSED FOODS and u won't have insulin and blood sugar issues. Consume, animal/fish proteins, high healthy fats, and veggies & fruits (minimize the fruits if you need to lose body fat), nuts & seeds. If you need dairy, get non-homogenized milk, raw cheddar, full fat organic yogurt. Lots of water when needed. The time to start is now..because once your kidneys start having issues and renal disease kicks in the kidneys can't do it's job and filter the blood...you won't be able to do much of anything then except go to dialysis 3-4 times a week for about 3-5 hours a day...what kind of life is that.0
