People You Care About Can Be DOWNERS

So I've been on MFP for several months now. I started at 129.8 which is the biggest I've ever been. I'm currently at 118.4. My goal weight was 119. So now I want to work on toning my body and building muscle. I've done Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred and about half of Six Week Six Pack. Then I started Insanity. I'm on month 2 and it's been quite a journey. I added Beach Body's Shakeology into my diet and I've been drinking it every day. Sometimes I'll have it for breakfast, lunch, or right before bed time. Now I'm thinking about buying the M.A.X. Creatine that beach body sells. My boyfriend says I'm going to ruin my body because I'm taking these supplements. He says I should eat a good breakfast and not replace it with a shake. In my opinion the ingredient in Shakeology are way better than any unhealthy meal I can think of. What are your opinions? On top of that my boyfriend is a Marine so he should know more about working out than me since they push them so hard in the Corps.

Oh and I must add that I started eating a little bit of organic products. My boyfriend says that's not good for me either. Just had to vent that out. I think he's nuts.0

I didn't say it was unhealthy. I switch up the shake and sometimes don't even use it as a meal. I use it as a snack. My point is he's saying everything I try is bad for me. Are all supplements bad?0 -
If you are getting what you need from a shake I don't see why not a shake instead of solid breakfast. For me, I can't do liquid replacements because when I go through the motion of chewing I trick my brain into thinking I'm fuller and I don't get hungry as often.
Just because he's a marine doesn't mean he knows nutrition. Does he know fitness? I would hope so.
Just make sure you are at your calories, getting plenty of protein, and that you feel good. It's not like you're taking steroids or anything.0 -
If it works for you then more power to you. Personally I'm not a fan of shakes and prefer regular food myself. I haven't really gotten into supplements yet either. Your boyfriend might just be concerned by the possibility that you're not getting enough food in your system or something. So long as you're eating at maintenance or whatever your intake goals are, let him know he has nothing to worry about and you just keep up the good work.0

Creatine works. There's no doubt about that. It will give you a bit of an edge in your workouts. It will add a notch to your strength or an extra step to your ladder but if you're working with a short ladder to begin with it's a waste of money.
Personally I think the thing that will help you the most for muscle building is to prop up your protein intake. Take at least 1 gram per pound of body weight each day if you're serious about building muscle. For you that means 118 grams. If you need to take a protein shake to do this then by all means do it. I'd skip on the Creatine for now until you max out what you can do with just hard workouts and a good diet. There's no need to throw that in there at the beginning. If you get your protein intake up there and work out hard and heavy (heavy for you. 8-12 rep range should be failure) then you'll get amazing results without spending the extra $50 -$75 a month or whatever they want for this stuff.
After you've been doing this for a year or so and feel like you want to step it up, then add in the Creatine and see what you think. For now, just add in protein. (My humble opinion)0 -

ok then, i just thought that sentence was a bit confusing.
as to 'are all supplements bad' I could only say maybe try and see for yourself, listening to your body, not your bf or even omniscient people on the interwebz you seem to like these shakes for some reason, well go ahead and follow through, and then at least you'll know if it works FOR YOU or not.0
