Inca Inspiration!

Hi
I am recently back on MFP after falling off both the diet and fitness wagon. Reason I fell off - pushing myself far too hard in far too many aspects of my life.
I am back because I plan to trek the Inca trail in April next year. Therefore I must get fit again!!
Walking will be my number one focus and with that in mind I am heading out on a five mile ramble this afternoon. But what else should I be doing? I would rather avoid the gym if I can, but could do a session once a week if thought essential.
(I will also be losing weight to ease my burden!)

Why are you avoiding the gym?0

hit the gym. strength training is essential to your goals.
buy a camelbak and start walking around with it. i'm assuming that the Inca trail will require you to have a pack with gear.
go out and find some trails for you to hike and walk and soon, you'll be running it.0 -
Only avoiding the gym because I do not have a decent one close to me, except for high end hotel type ones. But I could use the council one at weekends. (I finish work after it closes on a night)
I have a few dumbells at home, a couple of kettle bells, a swiss ball, mini-tampoline, and resistance bands.

Thanks - yes will be carrying a small pack, but tents etc are carried by porters. You used to be able to do it on your own by Peru brought in new laws and regulations and you have to use an official guide group.
From what I understand the biggest challenge are the thousands of steps!0 -

Was thinking how best to tackle this. I have counted my house steps tonight - 16. Thats a lot of ups and down, unless I can find a convenient tower block close by!0
