Calories burned cycling - calculator vs. mapmyride

Recently I rediscovered the joy of cycling (how could I forget what was my favourite thing in the world).
To track my calories I use an app on my phone called MapMyRide, but it seems that the results are grossly overestimated. For example MMR gave me almost 2200 calories on 27km ride, while MFP estimates only 998 (140 minutes at leisure level).
Which estimate should I go by? MMR uses GPS so it should be more accurate, but it does not seem to account for the downhill ride.
I know I could buy a heart rate monitor, but I had some expenses on cycling this month so I'd rather save by using what I aslready have.
