Cutting out carbs ....

I recently cut out carbs such as breads and pastas, and have been eating a lean protein, non-fat dairy, and veggie/fruits diet. I have felt great after switching over to this, which has been about two and half weeks, but recently I decided to allow myself a cheat day, so today I had some alfredo primavera (only 1/2 cup) at work and now my stomach is cramping really bad. This also happened about a week ago when I had a half cheeseburger and some garlic fries. Has anyone else had this happen? Has my body just become to accustomed to healthy food so now it can't handle the junk? Just curious .... appreciate any feedback! Thanks

Usually when people cut carbs, they replace it with healthy fats. Eating low carb and low fat... kind of unusual.

But yeah, people notice that. Especially when cutting out wheat and such.

Cut out carbs, yet eating fruits and vegetables...one of these two statements has to be false.

your statement is contradicting, how can you cut out ALL carbs and still eat fruit, you know fruit is carbs, veggies are carbs, carbs are NOT the enemy they are a normal part of the human diet and the body needs them to function to its full potential, but Ive been around the block a few times I know how things work on sites like this, people only want to hear the advice that supports their original theories and anyone else can screw off is the general mentality so you can think whatever you want but the cold hard scientifically based TRUTH is that carbs are a normal part of a true healthy diet and should not be avoided.

Well I still use healthy fats such as extra virgin olive oil to cook with or in salads. Also I still eat healthy carbs that are in veggies and dairy products but basically cut out all pasta and breads, sugary foods and candy, etc. so probably why I'm getting a stomach ache now. Thanks for your input

Yeah I didn't mean "all" carbs when I wrote this post. I meant breads, pastas, etc. Forgot to mention that I've been eating the "healthy" carbs. Oops

I get body aches when I go over 100-150 carbs, I've noticed. Not stomach cramps though. It could be some sort of food intolerance?

It may be the heavy cream doing that to your stomach.

2.5 weeks probably isn't enough for your body to get so accustomed to low carb that when you eat 1/2 a cup of pasta it gets upset.

I don't eat red meat anymore and haven't for months. The last time I did was in June & I hadn't eaten red meat in about 3 months at that point and I was sick as a dog all night. Haven't had it since!

So yes your body can reject/forget how to digest certain foods if you go long enough without them but I don't think you've been low carb long enough for it to really be that I'd guess it's because of how heavy the sauce is.

When you cut out anything, doesn't matter what it is - carbs, dairy, sugar - your body is obviously going to retaliate when you injest it again because it is not used to it

So, you cut out grains, legumes, refined carbs... maybe that's a more accurate way to state that :-) Many people have "tummy troubles" when eating refined carbs if they haven't had them for a while. Honestly I'd take that as a sign that your body doesn't want you to put that crap into it and find other fun things to "cheat" eat.
I've pretty much gone to the same diet as you, but when I "slipped" and had a bunch of bread it barely made me uncomfortable at all. I was actually rather disappointed by this - I was hoping it'd eff my stomach up so that I'd be less likely to want to eat that crap in the future, but nope... guess I'll have to stick with just willpower.
Even though my digestive tract does tolerate crappy carbs fairly well, I overall feel wayyyy healthier both physically and mentally when I don't eat them... so, if I were you, I'd take it as a good thing that your mind and body are both in agreement on the foods you should stay away from :-)

I have been eating low carb since March....and I feel very good doing it! I eat lean meats, lots of veggies & fruit. I really missed bread when I started....but now I really don't. I don't have a cheat day, so I can't say if I would feel sick eating carbs.

    Good luck.

This is normal. I went extremely low carb for 10 months to lose the bulk of my body fat, and couldn't believe how awful I felt when I started reintroducing carbs. And it was simple stuff like fruit (other than the berries I had on lc), rolled oats, and whole grain bread. I'm still getting used to it, as well as fighting the initial weight gain that comes with increasing carbs.

I would strongly advise no cheat days/meals on your lc diet until you're close enough to goal that you're okay with slowing it down considerably.

Hey thanks!! That's a really good way of looking at it. Apparently like you said my body is telling me to stay away so I guess i'll figure out different ways to have a "cheat" that are a bit healthier ... at least until I hit my goal weight then maybe i'll slowly incorpporate some of it back in. I do miss my whole wheat toast with peanut butter. Perhaps a better cheat food! Lol
