Majority of the discussions I have with people about my weightloss, which happens more often now I've lost 13kg/ 28 lbs, are very positive and supportive.
But then there are those people.... RARG!
I can handle people who are just uneducated and are willing to listen and not pass judgement. I don't care if I change their whole opinion ever or at all, just that they know what I'm doing.
It's the people that are so freakin ignorant that drive me mental. Yes, sometimes I do have a hot temper but I don't deal well with idiots. If you are going to ask me a question, don't do it just to goad me into an argument or make me feel like I'm wrong. That's gaslighting and makes you look like an a-hole rather than belittle me.

Things I'm really tired explaining to people who wont listen (and you can't tell until you're halfway through)

-So ALL you are doing is eating healthy and exercising?
-Yeah yeah, I get that but do you think you can commit to that for the rest of your life?
-You should really be on 1200, it's what weight watchers (other random diet plan) do for all women and it's the best.
-Don't you think eating lean cuisine/healthy choice is cheating?
-It's amazing that you've lost weight by doing something so simple!
-You're just going to end up with loose skin anyway.
-Who are you losing weight for?
-You eat a lot, there must be something you are doing? No really, what's the secret?

I am tired of being treated that just because I'm fat that it puts me in the lazy category and it means that I have to take shortcuts because it's too hard. Even by people who know me and know how active I've been in the last 2 years.
I'm offended that people think I'm lying to them, like all this fruit and salad is just a facade and secretly I'm downing pills and spending my time at home on the loo.
I get frustrated with people who are convinced their blanket solutions will work for me. So, you've done your diet plan how many times now and you are still trying to lose those few kilos you keep putting back on every winter? Tell me again how it's going to work for me in the long term? I don't expect to change them but not even stopping to have a discussion on why these things don't work an evaluating their own behaviors is infuriating. Tell me again how 'once you lose the weight' you can go back to the lifestyle you had that got you here in the first place....
Yes, I do think I can commit to eating better and exercising 4-6 days a week for the rest of my life. Why is that such a fantasy? I actually don't ever plan on giving up calorie counting ever. As technology advances it's going to get even easier for me so I don't see it as something I should have to give up. I may not have to do it so religiously. I may not have to pre-log. In fact I see myself getting to a point in 12 months where I can log at night time and be pretty on the money most days. I'm already getting to that stage when making my food to pre-log for lunch and breakfast the next day.
I don't care if I end up with a bit of loose skin. I'm already getting a bit like that now but I'm way less embarrassed about that on show than all the fat rolls I had. So what, people will able to see I USED to be fat but I changed that and I'm not anymore.
Yes, I'm losing weight for someone. Me. My partner has loved me the whole 4 years we've been together and found me attractive. He doesn't find me any more or less attractive now. And he knows he wont when I get to whatever place I'm happy at. He's supportive and congratulates me. He's always bought me clothes and loves the way I dress because nothing is on show, I'm classy and I have my own sense of style. That's not going to change. Just because I'm smaller doesn't ever mean I'll dress like a tramp because I can.
Losing weight and being healthy shouldn't be torture. It shouldn't be a temporary thing you can't wait to stop.
I don't understand why I need to be on 1200. I'm on 1500 and have lost 4kg /nearly 9 lbs in 2 weeks. I'm netting 1200 and I wasn't before so my body might be really in the zone. I don't burn more than 3500 calories a week, I'm lucky if I get to 2000 sometimes. So I'm not treating myself like crap. I'm considering trying to net 1500 to slow things down a tiny bit.

So please, if you ask me a question please be prepared to listen. I'll give you a complete answer which includes the reason why I do it and how the body responds. Don't write me off as another failure because you are just giving me more reason to succeed and for you to eat *kitten* when I do.
Haters gonna hate. Skaters gonna skate.

Love this post-you do what works for you!! Don't listen to negativity!! Haters are GONNA hate alright but you have made some awesome changes for the most important person in the world! YOU!!!
  • It really does surprise me the amount of people who think weightloss and being healthy is so hard but they can't tell me a reason why they think that it's so.
Most people haven't even tried to lose weight or know where they would start.

I guess the media has a lot to answer for in the way of marketing weightloss products. The most recent one I've seen is a liquid that fills the stomach (I'm sure it's not a new concept) ingested in the way of a shake. It turns to a glue like substance keeping you full and then passing out. I think that would be a truly nasty experience.... and talk about the possibility of malnutrition because you aren't eating anything.
How does that help you keep it off eh?

Oh yep, I can definately relate to this. Once, a friend (who I hadn't seen in a while) looked me up and down, then choose to greet me with, "So this is the new you now? Anorexia?". Took a lot of effort to bite my tongue and give a polite reply, let me tell you. I didn't take any 'shortcuts' to lose weight, and making comments like that about people who are genuinely trying to be healthy is just plain rude. It also made me feel pretty self-concious and like I should apologise for being a normal weight for my height.

But I've figured out something over the last year. If someone's truly serious about losing/maintaining weight in a healthy manner, they'll educate themselves on how to go about it. And have the self-dicipline to follow through, even if they stumble a few times along the way. They won't listen to the people who tell them what pills or fad diets 'work', and won't mindlessly swallow the advice of misinformed magazine articles/television programs. They'll find out for themselves how their body works and what it needs.

Kudos to you for not letting the words of silly people get to you, and congrats on your weight loss so far :)
  • Thanks Ally!
Even though I've had it pretty easy so far there have been a few ups and downs and I expect things to get harder. I guess because I've given myself room to make mistakes and know things wont be perfect.
I am very hard on myself though.

Lol Seriously. I guess people don't think that someone can do something as simple as change their habits to start living healthier.

This is so frustrating. I know what is working for me, but people who notice always ask what "diet" i'm doing. They don't even know how to react when I say, "no diet, just eating healthier." It's like they have to tell me about how Atkins, South beach, or what ever worked for them (once 5 years ago then they gained it all back). Well, obviously the diet plan didn't work if you're bigger now then before you even did the diet.

I completely agree. As I've gotten more familiar with counting calories and eating a lot of the same food, I don't always have to log my food but know I'm just making better choices in general. Will I ever completely stop logging food? Probably not, but just having an idea about what foods are better or lower in calories gives me the mental tools to make this work the rest of my life.

This 100%. I can not understand the fear of having loose saggy skin. It's not the sexiest thing in the world, but if I'm being most honest, people can overlook some loose skin more then they can over look someone being fat. You don't see the loose skin under your clothes, so who even knows except you? (or the person who looks at you naked  ) I'll take being a size 10-12 when I get there with some loose saggy skin then the size 26 where I started.

I love this and I'm so happy that you have some one that loves you and supports your efforts. So often on here I see stories of lovers and close family putting down weight loss efforts with snide remarks and offers of chocolate cake. I too have someone that loved me at 300 pounds, loves me at my current 238 and will love me when I hit my goal. I wish everyone had the support of someone that truly cared about making their own self a better, healthier person.

Congratulations on your weight loss so far and here's for the strength to keep on fighting! :drinker:

I also loved this little bit here. I told someone earlier today, the one good thing about being uneducated is that you can become educated. If you are truly willing to learn, you can accomplish real results.
  • Rachel thankyou for your input. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who is frustrated by these things

IKR!!! Or when people compare me to someone they know that has done one of these idiot diets and they failed so I will automatically fail.
I've done ALL those idiot diets and I know why not to do them. I know first hand they will fail even if I continue what I'm doing now along with really unpleasant side effects.

There are people I'm friends with who rely on the more 'acceptable' diet plans like shakes and meal deliveries to lose the weight every year and don't believe me that losing 10kg every year still does bad things to you r metabolism particularly when you are reduced to 700 calories a day. They complain how they have to be on it just that little longer every year but it must be the companies changing the formulas or something... DING DING DING or is it just me that can hear that bell ringing? It takes longer because your metabolism is stuffed. Your brain also knows you'll be putting it back on... fffffffffff >.<

I hate this. It is true that most people (who do "fad diets," I might add) gain the weight back. But I'm not doing some silly crazy diet. That is the biggest difference here. Fad diets are composed of shakes, bars, "eat this, but don't eat those" kinds of rules. When you have so many rules and restrictions, it's hard to do it for a very long time, let alone forever.

I eat 700 calories for a single meal sometimes. What people don't realize is that they don't have to starve themselves to become healthier.

If people focused on health and nutrition, the weight loss follows naturally.
  • I have 3 rules.

1.Meet the calorie goal as best as I can with the best choices I can make.
    2.Drink all the waters!
3.Don't get upset when I make a mistake.

I know! There are so many people I work with that are so shocked at the things I eat when we go out for breakfasts/morning teas/lunches for work meetings. I have 2 weeks to plan, we always get a menu beforehand (my team always have done this anyway to save time ordering so we can get on with the meeting) and I plug it in however long beforehand. I don't relook at the menu and just order what I was going to have. I still make the best choice but it's usually based around things I can actually log with confidence. Most of my team use MFP anyway so I'm lucky there.

Because of this I'm keeping a photolog diary on instagram and linking it to my facebook. Everything I eat I log with calories. I don't believe in depriving myself, because the numbers keep me from binging which I know I'm very lucky.
I have very high accountability with my diet. EVERYONE knows. So when I put something in my mouth, everyone knows that I know what's in it and I've logged it.
