Reliable Calories Burnt

Has anyone found a reliable way of working out calories burnt for any given exercise?
My main exercise is walking and I have been using two apps to measure my progress, 'Sports Tracker' and 'Endomondo'
Yesterday as a test, I ran both apps at the same time and got the following results.
Sports Tracker - 30 mins at 3.67mph = 147 Kcals
Endomondo - 30 mins at 3.56mph = 302 Kcals
I've also checked a variety of websites to look for an average Kcals burnt walking at 3.5mph for 30 minutes and they too vary wildly from 145 to 350.
All these results take into account my weight, age and height.
Any help would be much appreciated.

get a heart rate monitor with a chest strap. that is the most reliable way. calories burned depends on lots of things: your sustained HR, your weight, how fast you're going, is it flat/hilly, etc.0
