Yikes is right, but it's no wonder these people were dying -- 55% carb diet for diabetics! It absolutely infuriates me because my mother is diabetic and eating a high carb diet too because "the doctor said" -- it's criminal.

Tom Naughton's blog on the same study:

Where the $220 million, healthy whole grain, 55% carb diet study was a failure, a low carb diet was shown to be effective once again:

Technically the study diet guidelines were no more than 30% fat, and AT LEAST 15% protein.

But still, most people will naturally eat less calories if a higher % comes from protein in a day. You can take all the low carb vs. low fat spin out of it really. You are very likely to eat less if left to go by hunger alone if a higher % of your calories are from protein.

I will say that dietary fiber has a similar effect on satiety, so I'm sure raw vegan type diets (the extreme of more whole fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds) have the same effect on satiety as high protein diets. Either are safe and healthy when done right.

Do you actually have blood sugar issues? Just wondering.

Dietary fiber does nothing for satiety for the majority of dieters if these forums are anything to go by. If it did we'd all be happy to eat celery all day when we're dieting and never be hungry.
