My mom was just diagnosed with celiacs... (very bad - cant even take a pill with gluten). She is struggling with finding new foods so i was thinking of doing it with her as a life style change.. there are so many options now. Dominos even has gluten free pizza lo (not that it goes on my diet plan) :-). I just got some noodles I heard about , Shirataki that are gluten free as well to make some soups and stir frys.

I'm also interested in this because I have IBS and I have heard that eliminating gluten can be a real help. What kind of foods do you eat and do you feel satisfied?

I have IBS and tend to stick to a mostly gluten free diet. I eat a lot of sweet potato, sometimes a little brown rice. You can get pasta made out of 100% brown rice, its delicious.

Thank you :) and obviously it's helped with your IBS since you're sticking to it?

It has yeah, I still sometimes eat food with gluten (if I go out for dinner and have dessert, or occasionally want some bread, but I eat pretty much 'primal style' the rest of the time). As someone else said, a lot of gluten free products are still full of rubbish, so I tend to stick to eating natural foods, and avoiding grains and gluten free replacement foods anyway.

Has anyone read Wheat Belly? I'm on Weight Watchers, but I've heard a lot of good things about the GF lifestyle. I have 80 pounds to lose (actually 70 now!) and this just seems like the right time to be gentley moving in that direction.

I'm not completely gluten free, but I've cut way back. I feel like a different person. The extremely high/low blood sugar swings are a thing of the past. I can think more clearly, and a persistent seborrheic dermatitis on my face has dramatically cleared up. I'm eating a lot more "clean" foods, too. I get a lot of recipes from Clean Eating magazine which is accessible online.

I wish you all the best with your weight loss/fitness journey. Glad to hear that you've discovered that gluten was such an issue. You will do great!

I just found out a few weeks ago that I have a Gluten sensitivity & am going to a GI Specialist at the end of this month to have the testing done for Celiacs Disease but for now I just know I have to get rid of Gluten and am trying to phase it out so any tips on how to do that would be great and of course any websites as well. I know of a couple of sites/blogs so far:

I can tolerate Oats, but they HAVE to be gluten free oats or they give me indigestion same as before :(

I cannot tolerate dairy, it makes me... well, very uncomfortable put it that way!

I struggle with lots of garlic and have issues with lots of yeast.

These things i DID have intollerances to before i gave up gluten, but my reaction to the gluten was masking them.

The only thing i cannot have ANY of, is dairy, its absolutely not worth it at all.

Given that yesterday i was 'glutened' and have a bit of a hangover from it today, i think i am able to deal with gluten if i REALLY want to deal with the aftermath, so may engage in certain rare gluten-y treats if i want to in the future. As a day to day thing, no way though.

I will certainly not eat wheat again, that was definitely causing me to hold on to weight, you might not understand why i believe this but i just KNOW it in my heart.
  • my boyfriend has Celiac disease and he can not eat Gluten or MSG
So I went gluten free as well to support him.
I was amazed that my cravings for bread and junk food went away - even chocolate!
we eat a lot better then we ever have!
This was a blessing in disguise!

Nice! I went gluten free 7 months ago and no longer have IBS, horrible menstrual cramping, foggy brain or puffiness. I feel AMAZING without gluten and can tell within hours when I've had some gluten. Yuck. I can't beleive I lived like that for so long!!

Good for you! I've been GF for about the same amount of time as you. I'm in testing now for various food allergies and decided on my own to try GF, just because I was so tired of feeling lousy and was ready to try anything. I am feeling so much better. The dark circles under my eyes are gone, I have much more energy and my skin looks much clearer. I just finished reading Eat to Live and am considering trying a vegetarian diet, at least for a little while.

This is a great time to go GF since there are so many more tasty products than a few years ago for those cravings when you're first starting out. Tinkyada pasta is fabulous (not calorie-free, unfortunately) and Udi's makes all the wonderful baked items you will miss (also not calorie-free, alas.) Bob's Mill makes flours for home baking/cooking. Do read labels; manufacturers sneak wheat, gluten, and hydrolized plant protein or food starch plus other gluten ingredients into all kinds of prepared foods you'd never imagine.

I agree with the poster who said it was a blessing in disguise. It doesn't bother me one bit to say "no thanks" to the endless pieces of office birthday cake, boxes of donuts or platters of cookies that show up at meetings. Burgers taste almost as good w/o the bun (even Umami Burger will do a protein-style lettuce wrap on any burger you order.) For some reason I feel less deprived when I have the GF excuse.
