Protein Question

My daily protein recommendation is 59 . . . and sometimes I'm eating over 100g of protein (like when I have egg whites for breakfast and then a protein smoothie for lunch and salmon for dinner plus all of my fruits and veggies and salad etc. and almonds for the day. SOOO my question is, is too much protein a bad thing?? Why is it in the red?? What happens if you eat too much--can you eat too much???

I don't know but my professional nutritionist recommended i get 45g daily. So, you are not too far off. It won't hurt you to now and then not reach the mark.0

Well, kidney doctors will say we eat way too much protein in the United States and it's bad for us but I don't know if they are just talking about meat, or protein in general. Some people think you should have more protein than anything else, for easier weight loss. I just don't know.0

Unless you have some kind of problem with your kidneys you are fine eating 100+g of protein0

You can always change your macro percentages if you've got a good sense of how your eating habits break down.0

I was wondering this, too. I'm a meat eater, and I'm always over my protein (and my fat, but I'm slowly transitioning to lower-fat milk, which should help). Now that I'm tracking, I've discovered there is a lot more protein in non-meat foods than I thought!0

ive two seperate dieticians who recommended between 60g and 75g per day0

I think 45 grams is WAY too low for anyone who is getting regular exercise. Most experts that I have read state that we should get about .8 to 1 gram of protein per pound of lean body mass. My goal is 134 grams, but I average about 90 grams. Also, studies have shown that protein should be at least 25% of total calories. People who eat less than that when trying to burn fat will be less successful.0

Actually, I have just switched from low-fat dairy to higher fat dairy. I have been reading that the good amino acids found in dairy fat are only in the regular version and non-existent in the low-fat varieties.0 -

don't eat that much protein unless your are weight training or working to build your muscles. weight trainers say eat your lean body mass weight in protein if your weight lifting. If your not weight lifting or doing some kind of muscle exercises a lot , their really is no need to eat all that protein.0

I aim for 140g0

you can can in and change your percentages OP for Protein/Carbs/Fat
MFP is notoriously low on protein settings.0 -
I eat 146g of protein per day and have been eating high protein ratios for a few years now. I am still alive, healthy and in fact my broken bones seemed to heal faster than the doctor's thought. Protein is filling so eating too much would be really hard. But there are many schools of thought on protein, from my experience the higher the ratio of protein to simple carbs I eat, the more my body loves me and looks a whole lot better : )0

sounds like you are eating lean protein so and good Carbs which is clean and balanced ..0

I aim for 120-140 grams a day, but I do workout out most days. I wouldn't go for lower-fat milk, lower-fat just means more sugar and less satisfying. Also, MFP default settings are way off IMO. I used custom settings for everything.0

I agree on the lower fat stuff, I eat full fat everything and even use double cream...coconoil and eat nuts and flax seeds every day...0

For some reason MFP recommends a super low protein intake idk why but you need atleast 1g of protein per pound of bodyweight0
