This is a mini-rant before you go any further I went to the store today to get some frozen fruit I could make smoothies with. You know, you go to the frozen fruit and you expect to get FRUIT and nothing else. I turned the bag over and looked at the ingredient...sugar syrup added. Seriously? I'm trying to make a healthy snack and you put sugar syrup in my fruit? UGH what ever happened to making food with wholesome, real ingredients with nothing added? It's not just the fruit...but It made me realize why it is so easy to gain weight....our food can be so deceiving. Even people that are trying to be healthy really have to take a look at their food. And don't even get me started on the unnecessary sodium content of most foods at the store.
Needless to say, I had to buy organic frozen fruit...and the only ingredients were fruit Too bad it was double the price :noway:
Ok, mini rant over

I had the same experience the other day...so I hear ya :ohwell:
I guess we're getting what we pay for w/the organics though :happy:0 -
Thanks for the warning...I did not even look at the label on my Trader Joe's frozen fruit. I will have to go check that out.0

Keep ranting!
This is one of my biggest beefs! I get that in order to make things convenient they have to "preserve" it -- but why add things we dodnt need (like the syrup???)...and why when we want to get things that are better for us are they double (or more the price!) -- I swear that "they" are trying to keep us fat!0 -
This is why it is so important to read labels. What looks good may not be, I was buying those supplenment bars for snacks between meals. When I signed up for this and started actaully looking at how many calories for one I nearly freaked. Not only are they fairly expensive but they aren't that good for you.0

TJ's is usually pretty good about not adding stuff...but always wise to check.
When we decided to try a gluten and casein free diet for our autistic daughter, I had to start scouring every label, and it frightened me enough to stop buying canned, boxed and frozen food. Unfortunately my dh and I just had a "discussion" about our $1000 a month grocery bill. Buying only fresh produce and meats, poultry and seafood has been EXPENSIVE!!!!!
Everyone should watch Food, Inc!!!! I saw it in the theater and rented it for my family last night. Very informative.0 -
I really believe its nowonder so many people are overweight. there are so many GOOD tasting things that arent so high in cal/fat/sugar/sodium yet they continue to make/sell such "bad" things.
Like I wonder why do they even make regular mayo? why not just light?? who needs all those extra calories? why cant everythign be diet food! so much of it is actually tastey!
I saw a commercial for DQ chicken strip basket and having looked it up before its a CRAZY amount of calories and thought, its not even that great, and thinking how good a grilled chicken salad is, and tastes! for only like 140 calories, why cant they advertise that?? I think we only WANT it because we know its bad. If they glammed up a chicken salad or stir fry then we'd buy it.. is like the addiction of knowing its something naughty makes us want it so much more!0 -

I know, my grocery bill is outrageous for me being a single grad student. I used to buy things that were cheap and easy, and no wonder I was pushing 200 lbs. I was eating so bad!!
As for my smoothie, I made one the other day for the first time:
1/2 cup Greek yogurt
1/2 frozen banana
several frozen strawberries
a splash of orange mango juice
some splenda to taste (I've also heard of others using honey)
Then I just spin it all up in my food processor. It was seriously like eating a thick milkshake. You could add milk/water to make it a little thinner. It was good and it was like 115 calories. Very filling and delish! And now I can add my frozen fruit to the mix instead of the strawberries. Yippee!0 -
That sounds good!!!0

I try to keep my grocery bill reasonable by buying mostly fresh fruits and veggies, and just buying whatever is on sale. Recently, I've made roasted carrots, eggplant parmesan, sauteed zucchini, mushroom omelets, and I've enjoyed quite a few clementines and bananas. I don't know what I'm cooking for the week until I see what's got the best price tag. The fruits do get a little boring in winter, but this week, I decided kiwi wasn't too expensive and threw that in for some variety.
During other times of the year you could go to a farmers market or even check the grocery store for large packages of berries on sale and freeze them to use later on. Or use the organic frozen berries, but throw in cheaper fresh fruit like bananas or peaches (if they're on sale). You could also try using cheap fresh fruit, yogurt, and then add in some of those really nice thick fruit juices (like Naked or Odwalla) -- just watch the calories on those.0 -

Haha..I love it "knowing its something naughty makes us want it so much more"... I really think there is some truth to that! I thought of that as I drove by Arby's today...and I don't even really like it...its just that is what I can't have!
And...have you ever wondered why a side salad at a restaurant is like $2.99 extra? I can get 3-4 romaine hearts/stalks for that much!! I seriously think people are making a LOT on healthy alternatives because they know they can. I wish organic wasn't as pricey either...I think I'd be more apt to purchase it.0
