Scariest "Healthy" Food

What food did you think was healthy but then were shocked by the sugar or sodium? Did you find a healthier alternative to the healthy item? What was it?
For me, it would be some low calorie smoothies i used to drink. Low calories but totally loaded with sugar. Now I make my own so I can sweeten it with a tad of honey.

Definitely muffins. I use to think that they couldnt be THAT bad, especially when it is a banana or carrot type muffin, but nooo. lots and lots of calories.0

This, over and over. Have you ever noticed though, that the ones that are the worst in this area, are often the ones marketed toward women in particular? If you see the following words on a bar, eye it VERY suspiciously: lean, tone, toned, slim.
Met-RX has a few bars in particular that are overly high in the carb area, but they will also be the first to tell you that their bars are designed to make bulking calories easier to take in, without having a completely ****ty macro profile. When you're on a 4200+ calorie per day bulking diet, it can be a ***** to get that many in through 'normal' eating.0 -
I agree with Yogurt and Protein (granola) bars. I mostly stay away from yogurt and now get the natural 90 calorie bars.0

Corn. I thought corn was just like any veggie. It's still not bad and I still eat it, but I was surprised it was higher. I don't know why. Crazy.0

Fruits! They take up a large amt of my limited carbs!0

I still eat a lot of it and often, but I had no idea celery had as much sodium as it does. Kinda weird0

Pb&j. I thought- oh this is just a small amount of peanut butter, sugar free jelly, and wheat bread. Can't be that bad! (500 calories)
Oh and almonds. I can eat atleast 1 cup of salted almonds without realizing it. (170 cals for 14 almonds)0 -

I remember my mom telling me one time that her doctor asked her what kind of veggies she was eating and she started naming them and included corn...her dr replied "now you know they use corn to fatten pigs...and it is a grain not a veggie". I have ALWAYS remembered that...

Just food for thought.
They also use soy beans and cattle bi-products to fatten pigs. They're all cheap sources of calories, which is all that matters in the fattening process, it actually has little reflection on the value of a food itself. You could also fatten them on say, macadamia nuts, but that wouldn't be cost effective.0 -
"Healthy" breakfast cereal. I was shocked to learn that one serving of a generic raisin bran has more calories in it than one serving of Fruit Loops. The cereals that say healthy on the box are really not healthy at all.
On a side note...did you know that McDonald's chicken nuggets have an anti foaming ingredient in them. That completely grosses me out.0 -

You can cut the calories drastically if you get fat free wheat bread. Two slices is 80 cals. It cuts it from 500 cals to 300 which is average for a meal, which the sandwich is.0 -
Quiznos Veggie Sub
A regular sub which is I believe 8 inches, is 720 calories & 43 grams of fat. That significantly more then a big mac!0 -

Cheesecake! Some of the really decadent versions can be 1000 calories or more. A slice.0

Well yes if you're only looking at calories. But check the differences in food value.

I was shocked by sodium content of the lite Soy milk. I have high blood pressure and wasn't doing myself the favour that I thought I was. My doctor said 'just stick to the cows milk'!

What makes sugar or sodium unhealthy? And honey's makeup is pretty damn similar to sucrose0 -
yogurt...love it, but don't eat it that much anymore, to much sugar in them.0

Subway. Or any sandwich shop for that matter. I used to think eating at subway or other sandwich shops = eating healthy but not always the case, you have to pick wisely same as any fast food place.0

^This!! i always thought I was doing good eating a PB&J instead of mcdonalds for lunch, but without measuring everything out, white bread, and full sugar jelly. Holy crap. I still love them and eat them, but it's in much more moderation now. :sad:0 -
the sugar content in fruit, like raisins in the larger box (sunmaid) is like 30g. dried apricots serve 20g. banana 15-20g.
I found this out by having a week where I went over by 350g of sugar.
i eat vegetables now. lol.0 -
