Not a big eater, but look where it has gotten me

Hi All. So, I am not a big eater but I can't lose weight. I do know that I am an emotional eater, especially when I am bored. Also, if I know there is something I really like in the refrigerator I will go and eat it. I sometimes think that I am addicted to food. My sister is our "garbage disposal" yet won't gain a pound. I look at food and I gain. I don't eat breakfast often, usually never, and lunch every once in a while. I usually eat a HUGE dinner, which I know should be the lightest meal of the day. Why am I not hungry during the day and feel starved by dinner time? I used go to Weight Watchers, but I can't afford it now. I also had a gym membership, but I can't afford that either. Having hypothyroidism and PCOS doesn't help either. Anyhow, I hope that you can lead me in the right direction. I know it is babysteps I need to take, but how do I start eating when I'm not hungry???

Just start small that's what I did.
I never used to eat breakfast for about 6 years, normally didn't have lunch either,
And then had dinner, but I found if I did snack, it would be junk food.
Try small amounts of cereal in the morning, or something like that, and then just snack on things
Like fruit and nuts or vegetables during the day
Your body is probably used to not having food so it's not going to be telling you when it's hungry.
Hope this helps!0 -
Thanks. That is what I am going to do. I am the type of person that wants to see results fast and get discouraged if I don't. It's okay though, once my mindset changes it will be smooth sailing from there.0

Also some gyms like the Y do offer scholarships for those who can't afford a membership. All through college had a scholarship through the YMCA it was the only thing that kept me sane.0

Why am I not hungry during the day and feel starved by dinner time?
If you are starved by dinner time, then you ARE hungry during the day. Start by getting on a schedule. Eat a little something in the morning, it doesn't have to be as soon as you get up. Many people I work with eat breakfast when they get to work, hours after their alarm clock went off. Eat something small, like even a piece of fruit- a banana or apple with some peanut butter. Keep healthy snacks with you that you can nibble on during the day- portioned out pack of almonds, string cheese, hard boiled eggs, yogurt...again small, but filling.
You should not be absolutely famished by dinner, which in the end could cause you to overeat when you finally get your hands on some food. Starting to graze on healthy snacks throughout the day is a good way to start taking baby steps towards spreading out your daily calories to avoid that "starved" feeling.0 -
You state you are not a big eater - but the question is what do you eat when you eat - if it is something that is high in calories - you may eat one meal but consume 2000-3000 calories.
With PCOS you may want to look into a low carb style of eating - I have a friend who has PCOS and found that a low carb eating style has worked quite well for her along with moderate exercise. I also eat a lower carb lifestyle so we swap recipes back and forth.
Re:
Weight Watchers...if you have done it before and it works for you - you should have all the tools available to you - if you google you can find a ton of free stuff about weight watchers, charts, points guides, etc...as well as places that have on-line forum groups (I am fairly certain MFP has a WW forum group) and tons of blogs. I know it is out there as I have done both group WW and WW on my own using only things I have found on the net.
Exercise: there is absolutely no need for a gym - there are a ton of things you can do on your own in your own home - there are tons of You Tube videos showing exercises you can do without equipment or with minimal equipment. There are a ton of cheap DVD's ($10 or less new - cheaper used probably) you can get. I did a ton of the Biggest Loser ones and some kickboxing ones when I first started. If you happen to have some sort of cable service with on-demand take a look and see what is offered - I have Comcast and have a ton of On-Demand options. Also check around local churches/community centers - you never know what you may find - I go to a kickboxing class at a local martial arts place 2x's a week they only had a one time $40 charge to cover the cost of boxing gloves - they do the classes as a community service. I know a community center near me does Zumba classes for cheap (like you pay $3 a class, and you only pay when you go)0
