Do Plateaus really exist?

I've heard that it's common in weight loss efforts to change nothing and be losing weight well, then nothing for a while, then you start to lose again. Is this really true?

If so, what causes it? Is it just that you get to a point where you're building muscle at the same rate you're losing fat for a while so the weight doesn't change, then the additional muscle increases the body's fat burning ability and you start to lose again because of that?

    There are a lot of factors that go into it at different times and depending on what you are doing. Water weight changes, metabolism changing due to long periods of undereating, the "stalls and wooshes" I think it is called which someone will probably post a link to, hormonal changes, etc. etc. Instead of thinking of actual scale weight, it is better to think in terms of fat loss. This can still seem to platuea as well, but it negates consideration of muscle and water weight changes.
