Congrats to you! I am going on a cruise on Nov 1st for 9 days. I hope I have the same success you did. I'm in a biggest loser program, and right now am in 3rd place. I have only 9 days before the end of the program once I get back from my cruise to lose anything I may gain. Yikes! Last year on a 5 day cruise I gained 5 lbs.

Glad you lost, but it sounds like your calorie goal was too low.

I noticed when I dropped to 1800 and did 3-5 hours of exercise a week - i stopped losing. Upped the cals and I started dropping again. Not discrediting the advice you were given, but I would watch how things go. If your weight stops when you go back to 1800, then try upping and see if your body responds differently. Everybody is different and maybe you stumbled into what will help you.

But glad you didn't have to worry on your cruise and didn't gain the dreaded "cruise weight" :)
  • I went to an all inclusive resort and definitely did not lose any weight!! :P

You probably experienced the whoose phenomenon following a refeed. Pretty normal. Most people who have been dieting pretty heavy for a while will experience a big drop in weight following a refeed.

Just want to share my own experience from similar situations.

I go on mini vacations often. Like once a month often, mainly because of my kids scout camping trips. I have some control of what I eat on these trips, but not a whole lot. I still track while on the trips, but I don't really watch what I eat, and have often said screw it to the whole eating healthy thing just for the sake of sanity, even though I still tracked my intake. I am on a 1200 calorie diet (max intake is 1200, will eat more on gym days to get to 1200 and compensate for what I burned) and the weekends that I have taken the "screw it" approach, I come back with a loss, even though I should have maintained or gained (because frankly I stare at a brownie too long and suddenly there's a weight 10 pounds more).

I do think that by taking "mini breaks" on the whole dieting thing does shake things up some and helps continues the weight loss instead of plateauing. Don't ask me for scientific proof, because I can't tell you if it's enzymes or what causes it. All I can tell you is from my experience.

I like to "shock" my body at least once a month, normally with bar fare and 1-2 strong drinks. I normally will be 1/2 lb lighter the next day too! Congrats on losing the 5 lbs! I may have ice cream for breakfast tomorrow now......

One of the biggest mistakes (after you prune out people who listen to Dr. Oz or use Shake Weights and such) that smart people make when it comes to nutrition and fitness is to think that bodily functions behave linearly.

    Read this: http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/fat-loss/the-ltdfle.html

Overeating didn't cause you to lose weight. The explanation from the professor is an oversimplification of some very complex stuff that goes on and about which there is still much to be discovered. I believe it to be fundamentally sound advice (you shouldn't stay on a strict regimented diet for too long, taking a break--food sensitivities and physiological impairments aside--can be a very good thing for both mental and physical health and well being), but don't think that the increase in food intake resulted in your body actively burning more calories.

Think about it from a logical perspective. Your body burns (this is just beer math) 2000 calories a day between normal activity and exercise. You lost 5 lbs eating 1000 calories per day over maintenance. That means that the act of eating more food caused your body to increase it's daily burn from 2000 calories per day to 5500 calories per day (3000 calories consumed plus (5lbs*3500 cals/lb) / 7 days). Do you really think that eating more caused an increase in your body's burn by 275%? That's not even taking into account the fact that you probably didn't exercise as much. Now this is rough math, and as I even said your body isn't a math equation, but the change in weight wasn't from an increased burn. There were other things going on.

    Regardless, congratulations.

If you work out heavy and then you take a break...you lose a bunch of water weight that your muscles no longer need to hold on to. I took a week off from lifting to recover as I started feeling sluggish at the gym from lifting. 4 days later (maintaining same caloric intake as all days including lift days) I had lost 5 pounds. I resumed lifting daily again, and 4-5 days later I was up 4 pounds because my muscles needed to repair again.

It has nothing to do with your overeating, it has to do with the fact you did not push your body with exercise like you normally do. Give it a week of exercise and come back and tell us if those 5 pounds are still off.

I dont' know about the OP, but when I go on a cruise I'm way more active than day to day, even though I don't hit the onboard gym with all the dancing, walking, walking stairs, etc. You eat a crap load, but there's also a crapload more things to for you to actively do.

Went on a honeymoon in Italy last week, and I gained 7 pounds. 7 glorious pounds from gelato, pizza, pasta, and wine. Worth it, plus it's not that hard to lose it again. Marathon in 2 weeks!

Lost muscle probably because I only did strength training one time, and since I'm nursing bicep tendintis and a piriformis issue, so many exercises are off the table right now.

Looking forward to healing and getting back into my regular routine

I enjoyed reading your story and also the resulting information in the thread. Our bodies are so complicated. That's why it's so important to keep pressing forward despite huge losses, little losses, minor gains, etc.... Just keep going!

Whether its true or not, who knows. Maybe we all need a cruise to decide again. I'll take one for the team. Send me.

We should go together --- a control group so to speak :)

I'm in too. I would like to kick start my weight loss again.
