My Best NSV Yet!! What a difference a Year Makes!

I ran my first marathon October 9, 2011 and, though I finished it, I came in dead last out of a field of 80 people who completed the race with a time of 6:54:20. While I was proud of the accomplishment of having finished, I knew that objectively this is not a great time, I walked just under half of it, and while the fact that the course was brutal (hills being the main reason that only 87 people had signed up to do the marathon in the first place) and it was crazy hot for October (28 degrees Celsius or 82.4 degreesFahrenheit) accounted for some of it, I knew that I hadn't trained to the best of my ability and that I was much heavier than I should be while distance running.

3 weeks later I joined MFP.

Well I ran my second marathon this last Sunday. 41 lbs lighter, on a nicer course and in better weather (14 degrees C (57.2F) instead of 28) and having focused on my running MUCH more in the last year, and I shaved an hour and 37 minutes off my time, coming in at a respectable (if not precisely fast) 5:17:22. And better still? WAY fewer blisters, and while still suffering from sore muscles am 100% better than I was 2 days after marathon last year. At this point I feel- well, tired frankly- but like the sky is the limit! Next year's marathon I'm aiming for a sub 5hr finish!

Wow! Great job. I've done two half marathons and after each one I'm left baffled by people that can manage to finish a full.

Ha ha sorry, I ran the Niagara Falls International which starts in Buffalo NY and ends in Niagara Falls ON and had about 14 different American runners respond to my cheery "it's going to be 14 degrees tomorrow!" with "what's that in Farenheit!?"

Well done! Which marathon are you going to be running? My first one was supposed to have a cut off of 6 hours but I refused to leave the course until I was finished, I told the race coordinators to feel free to pack up but that I was going to be finishing the route regardless. I didn't realize until I searched myself on sportstats.ca today that I even had an official time at the end of the day! I thought that they had stopped the clock, I guess I was just lucky that I finished before they had finished their takedown, the remaining volunteers created a human finish line for me and they handed me my medal :D (ha ha I don't think I would have done that at any of the bigger marathons, but it was a rural race course and I had something to prove to myself! was totally a "run fatboy run" moment)
