Please be careful

.........for those of over the age..of.....well............lets just say over 45...and have been a couch potato for a long time. Be careful when you start working out or changing routine. I can not stress this enough. If you start to hurt..........stop and think and if it continues... quit it and pay attention to your body.

I didnt.

......and now I'll pay for it.

I have shredded rotator cuffs in both arms. They're calling for complete reconstruction and weeks of rehab. For now Im choosing a less aggressive approach and gonna try some gentle PT.

Just be careful. Its hard when you're a go getter...but losing weight is a journey...it's not something to be completed in a few days or months. It's a lifestyle change in it's entirety. Getting hurt isnt the answer. I cant stress this enough.

    Yikes...sorry to hear this.

As the OP said, you should always ease into things you are not familiar with. If you have not lifted weights ever or a very long time....dont reach for the 50lb dumbells....dont actually reach for dumbells....go for the machines...correct your form, gain some strength and then move to dumbells.

Same can be said with cardio....if you are not cardiovascularly fit....dont push it as your heart cant keep up with the oxygen your body needs....you run at 10 mph, you'll pass out. :)

not sure machines are the best way to learn lifting form?

in fact using the pec flie machine used to kill my rotator cuff.

I started light and slow....3 lb dumbbell different moves for 10 minutes for a few weeks......then added a 5 and 8 lb'er....then upped the time slowly to a 40 minute workout 5 nights a week doing like 10 different moves ...different ''areas". I then added some calisthenics...several different moves for 5 or 10 minutes...some sitting, some standing etc.

I was about 3 months in when I noticed I couldnt sleep at night but didnt figure out why right away. As I began to pay attention I noticed my shoulders and neck were super sore all day. I backed off the dumbbells. Then I noticed it was a burning fiery ungodly pain in both hands, right worse than left (Im left handed thank GOD)....it would wake me after 90 minutes or s and take me 2 hours or more to settle it down and there ended my sleeping.

Problem was....the pain grew in leaps and bounds and now affects me every moment of every day. The fire and numbness almost never stops......it hurts so bad my arms actually will tremble. My neuro was appalled that it got this bad this fast.

...........now they know why. Im disgusted. All Im left to do for working out is walking or swimming. We'll see. However......I refuse to let this kill my lifestyle journey of change and healthy habits. (Problem is....Ive had extensive reconstruction on both knees and my back.............UGH)

Please....just be careful. Dont give up.....Im not........just pay attention

Aww. Baby..hugs. It can be hard to go slow. It is also hard to see the signs that say slow down. I think this may be why my doctor and other fitness sites say to work out different muscle groups each day. For instance, I worked on legs and overall muscle today. Tomorrow will be arm muscles strength. Thursday will be simple stretching/yoga...and so on. After a month of this, I will add resistance bands to my workout. 3-6 lb. I do not intend to go over the 15 lb. mark. I will use repetitive over adding weights. This is how I have lost weight and kept it off. When I can, maybe in a year, I want to add water aerobics and swimming to my routine.it will have to wait until I move to Canada full time.
