how accurate is ur bmr??

Hey guys
I have recently invested in a nutritionist to help me get on the straight and narrow and I asked her how many calories I should consume a day her answers shocked me. I told her I wanted to lose a pound a week too

I am a 5.9" female weighing around 170 lbs and have played football most my life
Her answers were

On a normal day with no work or training 2000-2200 calories per day
Working 9 hours and no training 2200-2400 calories per day
No work and two hour football training 2400 calories perday
No work and football match 2400 calories a day
9 hours work and football match 2600 a day
9hours work and 2 hours training 2600-2800 calories a day

I couldn't believe the answers and was shocked that these numbers also would product a one pound loss a week.

has anyone else been advised of numbers like these??

The only way to calculate an (almost) exactly accurate BMR is to hook you up to all sorts of monitors and crap and measure Oxygen to Co2 ratios as you exhale (gives a measure of the rate of cellular respiration which indicates metabolic rate). But for the purposes of weight loss, an estimate if fine and those sound fairly accurate. Good luck!!
  • Today I decided to put on my hrm and see what I burn on a normal day with work. I started at 9.30 am UK time and its now 0.15 into Tuesday morning. I will be sleeping till its turned off and im in bed the now. Its sitting at 1526 at the moment I need to burn 700-900 calories over night to product these numbers...... Restless night required.
I do have an unusual low resting heart rate in the 30s maybe I need to tell her this!
Its only 75bpm at a brisk walk!

HRMs, the chest strap type, aren't accurate for measuring daily cals burnt. They're only really accurate for elevated heart rate cardio...or so I'm told.
  • Thanks for the heads up...i invested to encourage myself to go running everymorning and it worked for two weeks...i love seeing the results. But then again I can run on a treadmill and see I've burnt 900 calories and look at my watch and it says 400....gutter so I try not to look at the treadmill
  • Well I woke up at 08.45 and my heart rate monitor had stopped reading my heart rate and I don't know for how long but its reading was 1945 calories so id say 2000-2200 is accurate wow.
Now surely to lose a pound a week I need a 500 cal a day deficit?

That sounds like maintenance, not what you would need for weight loss.

Take 500 or 20% or whatever away from the above.

Heart Rate monitors aren't really for wearing all day to check calories burned. It won't be accurate. If you want to wear it all day get a fitbit(?)

Those figures are not your BMR, but your TDEE less some for weight loss by the sounds of it. You BMR would be a bit lower, but by the sounds of it, it all sounds sort of right.

I am hoping it also puts into perspective why 1200 calories is an ABSOLUTELY MINIMUM for females and NOT an average guideline.

It is good to get to know your body and especially when it comes to these figures, knowledge is power!!!
