I have a rather embarrassing question

Since I started trying to make these lifestyle changes I have been taking fiber, eating lots of high fiber fruits and veggies, drinking lots of water and have greatly reduced the amount of fat and calories in my diet, However it seems that I just can't go. Could this just be because my body is not yet accustomed to the changes? Or is it something I may need to have checked out? Has anyone else had this problem?

  • The only thing I can think to recommend to you is "Activia". Some people I know swear by it and I'm goint to give it a try as well. They say you do have to have one every day for two weeks to see the full results.

I use chocolate laxatives before bed when I'm having issues. Just remember to drink LOTS of water with what you're eating. It will make a difference.
  • Any major lifestyle changes can play havoc with digestion. If you notice a continued problem, you can try a laxative once or a stool softener, but generally, your body should regulate itself soon.

I have been eating Yoplait YoPlus Light and it has the fiber and probiotics in it, it's delicious and it really does work. I've been eating for about 3 weeks now, definitely give it a try!
  • Normally I would suggest water and lots of fiber, but you said you're already covering that. Not sure what you're doing exercise-wise, but running really gets your body moving, if you know what I mean. I heard something about it "massages" your intestines or something gross...anyway, you could give that a try. But I think overall, it will probably fix itself pretty soon.

Okay -- not to get too personal here, but do you feel like you have to go but can't? Or do you just not have an urge to go?

    :embarassed:

Because I have noticed since I started eating healthier & eating fewer foods with processed ingredients, my body seems to be much more efficient than it used to be. I don't go to the bathroom often at all (2-3 times a week, I guess). And when I do, it's a small amount.

Woah, I know, way tmi. But, anyway, I wasn't startled by this because it's exactly what happened to my dogs when I started feeding them a proper species-appropriate diet! I take it as a sign I'm eating great stuff my body can really break down efficiently and use.

If you need to go, but can't, I suggest paying more attention to the fat you're eating -- you said you cut out a lot of it... but you NEED fat in your diet -- it's the type of fat that really matters. Fats in nuts and olive oil are great for you, so try adding those into your diet to increase your fat intake.
  • DRINK MORE WATER! I HAD THIS PROBLEM BEFORE MY BODY GOT USED TO THE CHANGES. I ALSO ATE OATMEAL IN THE MORNING. IT NEVER LET ME DOWN. I DIDN'T HAVE TO TAKE ANY MEDS TO MAKE ME GO. I JUST CHANGED MY DIET AND DRANK MORE WATER. (OATMEAL, RAISINS, PRUNES, FRUIT, WATER):smooched:

I agree with you, when you are using all the vitamins and calories...there is little waste left to eliminate
  • Activia is a good suggestion. Also there are cottage cheeses and milks that have probiotics in them. Kefir, Nancy's products (at Whole Foods)

Yogi Tea makes some really great blends of herbal teas. There is one called Berry Detox that has a nice blend of herbs that help the digestive system and liver. Its not a laxitive so it is gentle and safe to drink daily. It reduces water retension as well. And it doesn't taste like sewage. It actually tatses really good, I'm making a cup for myself right now.
(Don't let the name scare you, its not a detox diet, its not dangerous, its not addictive. Its just herbal tea with a blend that assists the digestive tract.)

Also, if you recently increased you fiber intake your body just may not be used to it. You can try massaging your colon.
On your abdomen, follow your colon from end to beginning. Start at the end massaging in clockwise circles and move around to the beginning of the colon. You go backwards because if there is a blockage you will free the blockage. Sometimes you may not even get to the beginning of the colon before you suddenly feel the urge to go.

    Hope that helps.

  • Since you have already added high fiber food and lots of water, I would recommend exercise. Since I have became pregnant I have bathroom issues too. I found that drinking at least 10 cups of water a day, eating at least 35 grams of fiber, and exercising at least 5 times a week has helped me a lot. Good luck!
  • I would recommend trying DanActive Immunity Light. Drink one of the small bottles daily and it takes care of this problem for me!

You may want to get a check up. Look up IBS symptoms online, Webmd perferrably. I have IBS and sometimes it really doesnt matter what I eat, I just dont go.

I have changed my diet as well, big time, and especially at the request of my doctor, however :frown: .. Good luck!

When I went to WW one of the first thing we were taught was to increase your fiber GRADUALLY and when you increae fiber you MUST drink tons of water. Increasing fiber to fast can cause an uncomfortable situation and without enough water you will be miserable. Exercise will help also, just walking on a treadmill if you have access, nothing crazy just walking briskly.
I'm sure someone here with more real education in nutrtio n can give you specifics, but that the dumb down version.
Hope you feel better soon,......like today!
