As a workplace adjustment due to a burst lumbar disk, my work has provided me with a sit-stand work station. (note: there are good work places, my back problem was not work's fault). Push a button and and my work surface moves to a perfect position for ergonomic position for me to stand, push another button and the same happents while sitting. I have an adjustable arm for my dual monitors. It has proved to be an incredible pain management tool. On a scale of 1-10, I am able to keep my pain under 3 all day. Before I was in the 6-7 level by the end of the work day and I don't even want to talk about the evenings. I could barely function.
To my surprise, in addition to work productivity and pain reduction, there was a fitness gain as well. My core and my butt have become much more muscular (using good core posture when I stand, and lots of incidental squats through the day). I have reduced over two inches in my abs and, for the first time in my life, I have a muscular well-toned bottom (in my late 50s, so this is pretty amazing to me). People keep noting that I have nice pants or they didn't recognize me from behind or am I losing more weight. It is pretty fun. My husband has also duly noted.
Anyway I haven't seen any discussions about sit-stand workstations and I especially wanted to recommend those who have back problems and have accomodating work places or are outfitting a home office consider some sort of sit-stand arrangement. I know this is anecdotal and I don't know if there are studies, but I have to tell you it beats surgery, pain, pain meds and is an excellent complement to physical therapy.
