I missed my BQ time last fall by 2 min, 12 sec. That was a bummer. I met the wall at 25 miles and got some seriously bad hamstring cramps. I only have to cut 6 sec off my pace to get it this year so I am hopeful for the 3:30. Just started my 17 week marathon training plan this week and spent the last 6 months building a monster base.

It's something I would like to do, but I'm not going to try until I've run for a few more years. I would have to maintain a pace faster than my 5K PR to qualify right now. With a few more years of fitness gains and an extra 5 minutes when I age up, maybe I could have a chance.

My weekly mileage topped out at 60 miles (with a long of 20) before my last marathon and I didn't have any real trouble doing the distance in either of my races.

Highest mileage is one thing to consider. here are a few more that are important as well. The more performance you're after, the more important they become.

General rule: more = better as long as you don't get injured.

Peak mileage is important. Now take a look at your four highest weeks. They should be fairly close. Peak mileage of 60 miles is one thing if you're highest four week average is 47 miles. Four week average of 56 tells another tale.

Long runs are important. having a backup med/long run is also important. the less the difference is between your longest run and the second longest run, the better off you are. A 20 miler with a 14 mile med/long run earlier in the week prepares you well to hold on to pace.

Consider hanging out in a running specific forum.

I tried for a few years until I got injured and totally unraveled. Am considering trying again next year.

side note: BQers are approximately in the top 10% of the marathon field.
