A bit of a rant about "plateaus"

Every single day there's at least one or two new complaints on here from people suddenly hitting a plateau. I've been watching this for weeks now - when I see a new thread, I can already tell exactly what will be in there - it's usually a woman who is either on a 1200 calorie or less diet or is on more calories, but ends up netting under 1200 calories - pretty much EVERY time.

Isn't it about time that someone makes a sticky explaining it to these people who pig-headedly stick to their close-to-starvation diets and then don't understand when their metabolisms grind to a halt? They will also be the first ones to argue how they don't believe in starvation mode, because it's worked for them for weeks, but when their bodies stop working the way it should, they can't understand why...

I am yet to see (ok, have only been watching this for about 3 weeks now) anyone hitting a plateau who treats their body a bit better and don't starve themselves down to 1200 calories.

*rant over* (for now)...

Funny, as most people I see with plateaus are not the type you've just described.

Read the forums. Sure there are people with 1200 calorie diets and netting under, but they tend to not be the one's mostly posting about plateaus.

Those people tend to be freaking out over 1 week of no loss and think they've hit a plateau. (They will eventually, but 1 week is not)

You are more than welcome to link here to every thread ever generated since you've joined to prove that everyone in a plateau is netting 1200 or under a day.

Otherwise, stop being a whiner about other people's problems. If it upsets you so much, don't read it. Plain and simple.

Mulderpf, I am interested to hear if there is science to 1200 calories as a majority of the population being close to starvation. Is the caloric deficit not based on our own bodies? How do you determine your goals may I ask? I am eager to learn and BE HEALTHY so definitely interested in hearing more from you on this subject. Thanks.

Funny that you mention it.. There IS a sticky right at the top called "Newbies Please READ ME (2nd edition)" unfortunately I think very few people actually have. That thread contains the answer to all those questions - or links to other threads where it is all explained. Everything a new person would ever need to know...

I've decided that people are just inherently lazy and want other people to do it all for them..make them a meal plan, tell them what to eat, tell them when to exercise , what to do, how to figure out numbers, what all the abbreviations mean. I mean why take your own time to research when you can come in here and have everyone just tell you. Of course then you never have a clue how to do it for yourself and when you hit a plateau (or 6) you have no clue how to deal with it - if it's even a plateau in the first place. Just do what I do and ignore it - it will NOT stop.

and don't starve themselves down to 1200 calories.

Absolutely ridiculous statement. 1200 calories is not starvation (or even REMOTELY) close to it for many people. Many people (probably majority) on here are women. And many of us are short. I aim to net 1200 calories. My TDEE on typical days (because I'm very inactive at my job) is only around 1900 calories. Hardly starving myself. And, my BMR is actually 10% higher than the online tools estimate so if I were "normal", my TDEE would only be about 1740.

I do agree though that posts about plateaus are tiresome when for most of the people it's only been 2 weeks. I've been at this for almost 18 months and never hit a real plateau. I will frequently though, have 2 weeks in a row where I don't lose. But the following 2 weeks I lose large amounts to make up for it - my body just seems to like to play catch up.

Nice to see your all so supportive!! If you don't want to help and support don't. No need to ***** about people looking for advice/help. Sorry but not all of us were born with your superior knowledge
