girl advice needed, TOM + vacay

Hey all,

i'm having a really hard time deciding what to do! you see, i'm going on vacation in december from the 25th till january 2nd. i estimate my period to hit somewhere around the 31st of december (new years eve, great), but i just don't know if its enough of a bother to have me use my birth control pills to skip it.

on one hand i'm like, ehh..it's only a couple days toward the end of my vacay..how much could it possibly ruin?

on the other hand, i'm like UGH, new years eve, really? i'll have to watch the clock and my crotch at the same time? plus, the first day or two is always the most painful.

BUT..i've never used this method to skip a period either..so i don't even know if i'll be putting myself in a whole new wave of crappiness by doing so. (i certainly don't want to blow up like a balloon for a whole month after this). not to mention, i'm fully aware spotting can occur..so what's the point anyway..i'd still have to wear "protection". which, in beach wear terms = tampon, anyway.

HALP! i need opinions from those of you who have braved periods for "special events" and how it went for you. or those of you who chose to defy mother nature, and how did that work out?

Well, it's 2012 so it's not like you're using a belt to tie down your kotex. I don't really see the big deal of it....

Either use your pills to stop your period from coming on time and the spotting will probably come 1-2wks after your supposed period OR plug it and bear it. Take some extra aspirin to help with the pain.

Don't fret. It's not that big of a deal :)

Honestly...I wouldn't bother. Like you said, it's a few days....you change things when you have to pee.. not really much more work than normal.

    Just worry about having fun!

I worked my BC for a couple of weeks so my period would happen after my end-of-summer fling left (probably not the best reason to do so, but dayum).

Getting back on track wasn't so much fun. I occasionally have really heavy periods with lots of terrible cramps the first couple of days and apparently this week was when it decided to hit. Not sure if it had anything to do with the changing of my schedule, or if I was just due for some pain. No spotting issues for me... I don't think a few days will really affect you, but who knows.

This will only work if your pills are monophasic and not triphasic.
If they are triphasic you will mess up all sorts of things.
If they are monophasic pills, start skipping the placebo's now. I never take mine. But it took 2 months to stop having a period all together.
PM me if you need more info :)

I'm not on BC, but if I had the option to skip my period I would take it up so quickly. You could always call your prescriber and just say, "is a big deal to skip the placebos and take the real pills in December for a trip? How should I go about that?"

I've used BC to skip periods for just that reason, but when it does come it is so much worse so I would just let nature take its course.

I am dying over this comment. I don't know how much your period is really going to effect the overall experience of your trip. You won't have to worry about swimming, or it "popping" up on your unexpectedly during your trip. Do you typically worry about bleeding through pads or tampons while it's going on? Are you concerned about having or not having sex? Period sex is really NBD, imo. If you're not, then I wouldn't worry about it. Enjoy your vacation. Periods happen.

I'm not on birth control (hubby had a vasectomy) but I went on BCP for a few months when he came home from Afghanistan because I was due the day after he got home from being gone for 9 months. :grumble: It worked out just fine and I had no side effects whatsoever.

I know it's not a BIG deal..if it were, I'd be at the doctor already plotting whatever I could do to stop it.

-You won't have to worry about swimming- .. What does this mean? I always worry just a little when i'm wearing a tampon for fear that the string might slip out of my swim suit bottom. Not the end of the world, but annoying to keep in mind.

-or it "popping" up on your unexpectedly during your trip- I don't understand how this won't be a worry either. Not sure if your period comes at exactly 7:44pm every 30 days or not, but I sometimes skip around a day or two. Sometimes it comes when I'm sleeping, sometimes right in the middle of a movie. This worries me a bit. I don't want to ruin sheets that aren't mine and I don't want to have to find some bush near the beach to hide in so i can put my tampon in.

-Do you typically worry about bleeding through pads or tampons- Yeah. Yeah, I do. Especially if i'm wearing white shorts, which I have a few that i'll wear.

Anyway...I think I made up my mind anyway. The possible side effects just aren't worth it to me. I might not LIKE that this is going to happen during my once in a lifetime vacay, but it is what it is.

Don't worry. From what I have learned from commercials, you can still go horseback riding, wear white trousers and a white bathing suit with no possibility of anything going wrong. If you see any blue liquid, though, you'll know what to do.

I start wearing protection around the time it can occur...a few days before I expect ...that way there are not "accidents". Mine have never been consistent and therefore I have found this to be most effective of never having a "bad surprise"

I know you've already made up your mind, but call and ask your doctor. Its very possible that you won't have any spotting as well. I've skipped my pills and haven't had a period ever, with no cramping or anything like that. If you're unsure of the side effects, you could try it this month and see what happens, as to whether or not its really worth it to you.

    Either way, have fun!!

I had my period on New Years Eve one year and I didn't die. Despite that being the one time a cute guy talks to me in the checkout line and asks what I'm doing that night....the convo ended quickly when I threw the tampons and pads on the conveyor belt.

Sounds like you dodged a bullet if he couldn't wait a week to get it!

Sorry about some of the immature comments but have you considered The Diva Cup ? Its great and its good for like 12 hours. Just boil it in between uses or use the ph friendly cleanser. I wear it when I have to workout and its soooo comfortable and I forget its in after like 30 minutes. I can't even remember the last time I used a tampon.

    LMAO too funny!
  • Usually I get cramps around the time I'm suppose to get it..that should be a clue to start wearing protection. Just my thoughts!

It's going to happen whether it's a little or a lot, Put your big girl panties and deal with it.
Are you going to be in Cali or some tropical island, cuz it's going to be cold to be swimming anyway?

    ^Unnecessary.

OP - Work your pills, if they are the right kind. Be prepared for it to take effect anyway, just in case, but if you start working them now, you could use the next couple of months to wean your TOM to a week or two later.
As far as worried about the string, just cut it. That's what the strippers do. If you got the kegel power, no worries. And if you don't, work on it!

That is an excellent idea. It never occurred to me to just delay my period starting now. Durr. I'm pretty confident any irregular bleeding will be cleared up in two months, if it happens at all. When I started this BC, I had zero side effects, so that is encouraging.

I'm on a tri-phasic pill, however..so through some reading I discovered I would have to take two doses of my "week 3" pills, followed by the placebos to effectively offset my period and give me the best chance of avoiding irregular bleeding. This, of course, would make me waste a whole pack just to get my hands on that extra week 3, and that makes me a sad panda. :\

As for everyone telling me it's not a big deal and to put on my big girl panties and such... No, it kinda is a big deal for me. I've never been on a real deal vacation and this is my first time. Who knows if i'll have the opportunity to travel like this again? I don't want to have to worry about if I brought my tampons with me to the beach. Or have to schedule the color of my shorts around "that time". And... what if I get my period in the middle of ziplining and i'm unable to get to a bathroom because i'm on a freaking platform on a tree in the middle of the jungle? Tell the group to turn around while I drop trou and insert a tampon? No.

LOL @ the stripper thing..not gonna ask how you know that ;) Also..a big congrats on your weight loss..50+ lbs is amazing.
