G brands in teh US

I'm heading to the US next week (California) - can't wait!!

I generally try to steer clear of processed and packaged foods however because we'll be travelling a lot convenience will be key. In addition, a large part of our trip will be on a boat and while we will be able to cook our access to fresh food will be limited on the longer sailing legs and we will need some options, particularly for times when we don't have the luxury of being able to prepare something and need to grab something on the run (eg- bad weather/storms).

Because Australian brands and US brands are different, I'm wondering if anyone can give me some ideas about some of the more healthy options, eg muesli bars that aren't full of sugar and fat. I will ,of course, look at the labels (my fiancee tells me I take way too long to do the grocery shopping because I check and compare everything! I'm a bit compulsive about it actually - lol!!) however some ideas about where to start (products / brands / etc) would be great.

Any suggestions?

    "Good brands in the US"
but I accidentally posted while trying to fix it and can't edit the topic. Oops...:ohwell:

how long will you be staying? and are you staying with people where you have access to grocery stores? i would stay with fresh vegtables and fruit and use your internet for restaurants most give the calorie content. But have fun if you are on vacation have fun... lots of activity

We will be sailing, so will need to stockup with things to eat once the fresh food runs out. So - we will have access to supermarkets at first for the initial stock-up and will eat fresh for as long as we can, but need to think long term and get some 'convenience' food once snacks like fruit and veg are no longer available. I'm thinking about muesli bars (granola bars??), fruit bars, nuts, etc, however bars are renowned for being traps - full of sugar and fat and nothing good! I'm hoping for some advice on brands that perhaps aren't as bad as others.

I SOOO envy you. I don't have access to a boat any longer, but I sailed for many years, mostly freshwater, but my family actively sailed when I was growing up and my dad did the Transpac race fr the West Coast mainland to Hawaii.

One thing I can recommend are the "Fiber Plus" bars by Kellogg's. They are not the bar that gets lots of advertising--that is called "Fiber One." I prefer the Kellog's bar for two reasons. First of all, it has about half the sodium that the Fiber One bar does, and it is generally less expensive. Being in close quarters on a boat and not having access to fresh fruit after a time, getting fiber can become a challenge, so this is a good source, and the dark chocolate almond makes an EXCELLENT dessert. Each bar has about 120-140 calories--can't recall exactly and too lazy to look :embarassed:

Have a WONDERFUL and safe journey. If you post again, how about including a little info about the boat you will be on??

Thanks weaklink109 - I'll definitely look out for those :) They sounds rather yummy!!

Our first leg will be from Dana Point to Hawaii, and then from there making our way back home (Hobart, Tasmania - Australia)!
    We'll be on a Catalina 42.

Some really great "granola" bars are Kashi brand TLC. They are made from all organic ingredients. Super good for you and they taste DELICIOUS. Here's the link to them.. http://www.kashi.com/products/category/Snack Bars

Good, seaworthy boat for that kind of a trip. There are a number of Catalina's in my area --Columbia River Portland Oregon area. My late father in law was a yacht designer. Used to work for Sparkman and Stevens on the East Coast of US. Came out West during WWII to work in Engineering Dept. at Kaiser Shipyards. He went on to work as a naval architect and designed a line of boats called "Cascade"--of which there are quite a few around on the West Coast.

Have a wonderful trip.:flowerforyou: If you have satellite internet service on the boat, you can post progress reports while you are underway.
