Starvation mode - daily limit?

I've done a lot of research about starvation motion, but I'm not quite sure about how many calories to eat each day to avoid it. I mean I know the daily calories for my intake while losing weight, but how do I factor in working out without going into starvation mode? And once I turn it on, how long before it turns off? Are there different levels of it?
