Does anyone have any idea how I can do any exercises after major abdominal surgery? I just got home from the hospital yesterday after spending 10 days in the hospital. I can't do much with my arms and I am really weak from being inactive for almost 2 wks. I am on lifting restrictions and I can't get in the pool until my incision from my sternum to my belly button heals. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Just continue to rest and heal. You can get back to working out after. Don't risk your recovery to burn a few calories. It's not worth it.

^^This. Follow doctor's orders. The abdominal muscles are complex and you want them to heal properly. Best wishes on your recovery!
  • Call your doctor's office and ask them. I would suggest that perhaps now is the time to focus on really eating well, getting your rest and following doctor's advice.

Hope you are feeling better just being away from the hospital, must be great being in your own bed and your comfort zone. Good luck with your recovery!

Thank you everyone for their advice. I am just not used to sitting around and not being active. But I will just worry about recovering for the time being. I see my surgeon again next Wednesday and I will ask him what he thinks then. I think that I will just try to do a lot of walking to keep/ get my strength going.

I hear you. Last time I was in the hospital, I was cranky from the idleness.

Just find things to do that fit with your recovery scheme, and try to pass the time as best you can.

    Good luck in your recovery.

Walking is best after surgery. Prevents blood clots, pneumonia, and keeps you moving and breathing deeply while utilizing variety of muscle groups. Speedy recovery to you :flowerforyou:

Hey honey, just take it easy and cut back on the cals slightly let your body heal. ..i have also got a op where i am out of action for ummm who knows(sat on my *kitten*) up to 12 weeks :noway: next month, not looking forward to it...at least you wont be stuck over xmas with all the sweetys and goodies about! :drinker:
  • So glad you are home. There is nothing like home. After surgery you must let you body recover and your body will tell you much of what you should not do. But most of all you need to follow all you Dr. directions for now and feed your body the food that will help it heal, like veggies and fruits and lean proteins. Just keep logging your food and you will be up in no time at all. Read a good book some arthur you like or venter out a little and find subjects you like to reserch more. For now feed the mind and the body will follow. Have a great day!!
And remeber to follow all Dr. directions as he knows best for you. But when you can walk that will be great too just don't over do when you start back so easy to do. Just remeber you are not alone here so use us as support !

Just take off for a while longer. It's best to just rest and wait before trying to get back into exercise. You don't want to put yourself in an even worse postition. It sucks but you'll have plenty of time to get back into exercising once your healed. Maybe just add some walks in if you can to help mentally deal with having to take off.

Did they have you walking in the hospital? If so continue that and try to do a little more. You could also ask your doctor for a physical therapy consult when you see him. A therapist could give you appropriate exercises to do for your condition. Take care and I hope you have a speedy recovery.

2 weeks 3 days since a total hysterectomy and abdominal cut. I've been doing 30 minutes slow walking everyday for about a week and it really is good to get my lungs going and stretch out the legs and tummy. Just take it real slow and start with 5-10 minutes if thats what it takes. I can't wait till I can up my workouts too- but not willing to risk it too soon. Good luck:bigsmile:
