I admit it. I truly hate to exercise. In my lifetime, I have found very few types of exercise that I enjoy - it's silly, but I just hate to sweat. The kinds I enjoy are not easily scheduled (ice skating), nor do I have anywhere to go with my children to spend time in a gym.

I do have access to a treadmill and an elliptical. At this point, I find the elliptical too difficult. I can do the treadmill about twice a week while kiddos are in preschool. Anything else, I have NO motivation for. Even taking walks around my home is difficult, as I live on a hilly, wooded road with no sidewalks. I have driven to parks, but my kids don't want to be in a stroller and walk slooooooow.

Oh, and did I mention that I have an excuse for everything????????? I can talk my way out of any exercise :)

Anybody else like me? And how did you overcome this? What did you find that you enjoy? I am seriously considering buying a WII and WII fit.........are people really losing weight from that?

Shari

    Hi Shari,

When I started I hated excercising too. In fact, it is still sometimes really hard to get started. Do a little every day!!! Every single day do something...anything...and make it a habit to do something. Over time you will start to do a little more and a little more and before you know it you will start to see the benefits and like it.

MFP's system of eating your excercise calories is the best! Skip the wii and buy a heart rate monitor so you will know how many calories you are actually burning.

It can be really motivating to excercise a bit longer just to get the calorie burn higher. My heart rate monitor is my best excercise friend!! Even when I feel whiny and want to quit if I look at the numbers and they are not high enough I just keep going!

    Best of luck!

    PS...read my quote below!

I hate it as well. Just like you, I hate to sweat!! And the treadmill is sooooo boring, but it's cold out here in PA so I have no motivation to go outside. Plus the elliptical - I hate that machine! And to get my cardio in I'd rather being doing something fun like dancing, basketball - something to get my mind off the fact that I am exercising and board to death (on the treadmill).

But eating healthy isn't just going to do it for me to get some of these pounds off and get some tone definition. Some times you just have to make yourself do it.

By the next day, when I'm feeling good and fit (even though I haven't lost a lb), I knew it for the better. So, some days you just gotta bust through. The pay off is worth the hard work!

As far as exercise goes, it doesn't always have to be awful. :noway: For my exercise, I walk almost every day, (weather permitting! ) I also dance to a fast oldies CD that my husband made up of all my favorite old songs. (Like "Love Shack", Wild, Wild West", "Mony, Mony", "Footloose", and "Gloria")
It's free, (unlike a gym!:grumble: ) fun, and I can even watch tv at the same time, so I never get bored!
I also have Wii Fit, and jog to that, which is a lot of fun, and easy too! My husband has fun with all the sports games, and works up quite a sweat, sooo, I'd say that the Wii DOES help some, especially if you're not getting exercise any other way!
  • I will you sister!! I'm not to keen on it either!! I try to walk 20 mins a day. I usually start on the treadmill but it's so boring I usually finish outside and once I'm out there I do pretty good. I do about 20 mins of aerobics, just exercises I've seen and read about to work my "problem" areas...and most days I go and play something with my kids after school...which they love!! I don't think it's best to split it up like that throughout the day, but I can't do anything for hours at the time and this way I don't get bored with myself!! I live in the country too and going to the gym everyday is just not feasible....Good luck to you.....

I LOVE exercising... not because I want to do it always and it is fun but because of how good you feel when you are done with a really good work out. It is mind over matter. Its not about having a good time... you eventually will love to do it because of the energy it gives you.
  • I don't hate exercise, I just hate the gym! :-P So I joined my local pool and I'm there 4 or 5 days a week to swim laps or for their aerobics class. It's FUN! And you do sweat, but you don't notice because you're already wet! I don't know if you have access to a pool or if you even like to swim, but if you do, it might be an option for you!

I own a Wii and a Wii Fit Plus. I lost about 5 pounds with the Wii Fit alone working out about 30 to 45 minutes on it everyday. I have to be completely honest and say that I got bored with it pretty fast! (But I have a short attention span.) I still use it once or twice a week, but I prefer to find other things to do now. (Like going to the pool and ice skating.)

In the summer, I like to ride my bike and jump rope!

For me, it's all about making it fun. If it's not fun, I don't want to do it.

I confess... I too hate exercising. With that said though, I hate being fat MORE.

What I do love is the feeling of accomplishment after a great workout. I love seeing the calories soar on my machine. Sweating is gross, but the shower afterwards, AMAZING.

I used to hate all exercise except maybe swimming and kayaking (and I was over the weight limit for my kayak :embarassed:) . And, since I don't have access to a pool or lake on a regular basis, I was getting essentially no exercise at all.

I started by finding something that was tolerable. It ended up being a stationary bike in front of my tv. It was really hard for me at first because I was pretty out of shape but I just got on it for however long I could manage while I watched tv in the evening. Sometimes I could pull off 30 minutes at a slow pace, other times I could only do 20, but I made an effort. Then as I built up my stamina, I decided I'd start getting up 30 minutes earlier to "get it over with," as it were, before I went to work. That got me getting in at least 30 minutes 5-6 times a week. Then I started walking during my lunch break (it was september/october so it was still nice outside) at work getting in another 45 minutes of exercise most days.

Then, the ridiculous idea of training for a half-marathon hit me. I've always *hated* running with a huge passion. I've thought runners were absolutely insane. But for some reason, I wanted to really push myself so I bought a used treadmill (there was *no way* I was going to run where anyone could see me). I could run for 60 seconds, maybe, before I felt like I was going to die. My mom, stepdad, and brother all think I'm completely crazy (and well, they're not wrong) but luckily I only have to see them on holidays so their negativity doesn't get me down  (they were pretty suprised about how much weight I've lost when they saw me last month). So it seems impossible and everyone doubts me. Great. That's a lot of fuel for my fire -- see, I really do love a good old fashioned challenge. Saturday I ran 2.25 miles. It's a far cry from the distance I need to cover to be ready for a half marathon, but it's literally over 30 times better than I was able to do in November. I'm supposed to run tonight and I can honestly say I'm excited about it. I'm excited to see how well I do. How much farther can I go, how much faster I can pace than I did Saturday, etc. It's a fun little challenge between me and myself and I love it. I also love that good ol' exercise buzz afterwards.
And I still get up 30 minutes early to put in time on my stationary bike.

Point of long, seemingly pointless story -- challenge yourself in some way. Set an "impossible" goal and prove to yourself & everyone else you can achieve it.

Also, now I kind of love being sweaty. :blushing:

I couldn't have said it better. This is exactly how I feel about exercise, but once you get through the initial roughness of not wanting to do it....it feels SOOOO good that you did.

I don't know if I want to say I hate exercise but I can say I haven't found anything that I consider absolute FUN as far as cardio goes. I love boxing but that only really gives your upper body a workout. I keep wanting to go outside and walk/jog and I know this is going to sound stupid but I am afraid of getting kidnapped. At 6am before work it's dark and after 6pm when I come home it's dark. At all of 5'0" I look like a kid when I am out there

Yup, I'm an exercise hater. But I just joined a class at the Y, called Health Seekers (they used to call it biggest loser), and there are prizes for the three people who lose the most percentage of weight. That is my goal right now! I wanna win! First place is a free year membership, second place is free personal training lessons, third place is a gift card to Target to buy workout clothes.

    I wanna win

    I wanna win

    I wanna win

But it sure sucked today when I had to do push-ups for 2 minutes straight. I started out on the wall, with a pretty good lean so it was pretty hard, but the the PT made me get on the floor to do girly style. Dang, I can only do 8 of those, and my arms were already tired, so I could only do about 3. lol....

    But ...

    I wanna win

I hope it's okay to laugh about this because I am.
But, I think you found your motivation -- just go outside and run fast enough so the kidnappers (even if they're just in your head) can't catch you.
