5K advice

I've been doing C25K for the past couple of months, and I'm set to be done this week. On Saturday, I did my 28 minute run and completed pretty much did 3 miles exactly. I found a 5K locally next Saturday that I'm interested in doing. My husband said he'd do it too. Although he plays some soccer - mostly as goalie, and he walks a couple of miles most days, he hasn't run seriously since high school - 20 years ago. He seems to think that he can just show up and run 3 miles without batting an eye. I don't want him to injure himself if he tries to run without any training. Am I worrying over nothing, or is this a bad idea?

When I was trying to build up my fitness I mapped out a 5.3km run around our streets and would run it every day, with the aim being to improve my time so I was getting faster. I first did it in 38 minutes - not exactly springing, but hey, I ran it. Then after a few months of running, I had it down to 33 minutes. I kept going and eventually could manage it, pushing myself in 28 minutes.

One day my S.O decided to join me. We did it in 33 minutes. Which peeved me off completely because I had worked for so long to get to that state. The difference is that he was nearly dead and sore for three days afterwards.

So while he might be able to run to prove himself, he'll probably regret it afterwards!

He won't hurt himself but he may be surprised to find he can't do it although my son who hasn't run in 10 years was laughing at me doing C25K and jumped on my treadmill and banged off the 3.12 miles that equals a 5k and then did a few more minutes just to prove he could. He also did it in less than 30 minutes so your hubby may surprise you!

He's not likely to hurt himself doing it once. Running injuries are more often from repeatedly doing too much too soon. If he were to go from doing nothing at all to running 20 miles a week, he'd be in danger of an injury, but one run should be fine. He will probably really really feel it the next day though.
