For the past week I haven't been able to sleep well at all. I will go to bed around 10-10:30pm which is normal for me it has been for the last few years. But now I will wake up around 4am and then not be able to get back to a solid sleep. I have tried melatonin (sp) and sleepy tea and no luck I have tried eat a bit better but I have always ate pretty healthy like I have been recently with no issues with sleep so I can't see it being my diet. I need help because this no sleep really hurts my gym time.

The more I workout the better I sleep. Maybe you've entered a self-feeding cycle of not working out making it hard to sleep making it hard to workout. Tough it through a hard workout today and see if it helps you sleep. If not, I think NyQuil just came out with an over-the-counter sleep aid you could try.

What time do you need to wake up?

Are you stressed about something that's making you stay awake when you wake up at 4am? I had some issues on and off this past week too and part of the problem was that my mind started up as soon as I woke up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. For me it helps to do something mind numbing like either reading a magazine or watching TV. They tell you know to do anything with lights becasue it can have the opposite effect but it's never been a problem to me.

If you can't sleep because something is on your mind, get up, write things down and then find that mind numbing activity. It may take an hour or so to get back to sleep but hopefully you can.

I've been known to take an Advil or Tylenol in the middle of the night too as sometimes the problem is that I'm sore from a workout and they not only help with the pain but help me relax enough to go back to sleep.

And if I don't sleep for a couple of nights in a row, I'll take 1/2 of a Tylenol PM or 1 NyQuil gel pill before bed. It's enough to help me sleep better but not strong enough so that I'm groggy the next day.
