Am I Eating Too Much Protein?

My doctor did some body composition on me and said my LBM is a pitiful 18.5lbs. This is embarrassing because I weigh over 200lbs. I am eating 30% protein, so is that too much? It's over 100g a day, so could that be stalling my weight loss? I read you're supposed to eat 1g of protein for every pound of LBM, is that right?

Thank you for any help!!

i doubt your lean body mass is 18lbs unless you're the size of a toddler --- go for the protein!! Mine is around 45% and i eat around 1g per LBM

yeah I doubt your lbm is 18 lbs. that doesn't sound accurate at all. you wouldn't be able to move if the rest of your body was fat.

but anyway... protein won't hinder weight loss.

No way you have 18 lbs of lean mass. You're probably in the area of 130 lbs or so.

That would make you 90% bodyfat, which is impossible
  • I'm glad to hear this. I was really surprised that it was so low. I did gain .5lb in the past 2 months, so I couldn't figure out how the heck I was going to get it higher when it takes so long.

My BF% is 39, definitely not 90! lol

    39% at 200lbs would be 122lbs LBM

    200 x 39% = 78 lbs of fat mass

    200 - 78 = 122 lbs of lean mass

If your BF% was 39% and you are 200 pounds, your LBM would be 122 lbs...if you are OVER 200 lbs, LBM would be MORE than 122lbs. A percentage is a percentage. If you subtract the fat, the REST is the LBM. LBM includes bones and organs too, not just muscle...

You might want to have your blood uric acid checked before you load up on too much animal protein. If it is high, (anything above 5.5 mg/ml of blood is high) it is pretty important to avoid purines, too much animal protein (for a woman, anything above 75 grams a day is excessive---unless you are a hard-training athlete) and to keep your carbs between 75-100 grams per day. High uric acid can stall weight loss by causing your body to convert carbs to fructose and fructose can stop fat burning in an obese individual. Sounds crazy that fructose could cause that kind of a problem, but there is new research just out that suggests just that. I tend to run very high uric acid levels and they have come down as I have cut my carbs to no more than 100 grams per day and fructose to 15-20 grams per day (along with the usual low purine diet). It has enabled me to avoid medication for the uric acid problem and I have lost about 20 pounds of fat as well.
