Wrist pain

I used to do yoga alot, then stopped, and now have started up again. The only problem I have is that my wrist is KILLING me. It only hurts when I put pressure on it, like in some poses, or if I try to do a regular push up and sometimes with resistance training. Just wondering if anyone has experienced the same thing, or have any ideas on what I can do to heal it? I am pretty sure its a weakness issue, not an actual injury, but I am not 100% sure.

    Is it just when you exercise? Do you have any swelling or other symptoms?

    I get wrist pain and there doesn't seem to be any real cause to it, I have found it's got better with some weight training as my wrists have gotten stronger. If it's really bothering you it is worth getting it checked out to make sure everything is OK. And don't put too much pressure on it if it is hurting as you may make things worse.

    Actually, saying that, my doctor did say that it could be related to my elbows as I have hyperextension where a lot of my joints bend further than the 'normal'range of motion. She thought that extra movement in my elbows could be causing the strain on my wrists. I'm now just careful not to over-extend my elbows.

    Have you tried push-up bars? They seem to take a lot of pressure off my wrists when doing push-ups or planks.

    It does only hurt when I am exercising, and for just a little bit afterwards. It doesnt seem to sweel or anything like that.....I have been eyeng those push up bar thingys for a while, I may look into them. I have an appt next week with my doc to check it out for sure.

    My elbows hyperextend a bit too, and I didnt know til my new yoga instructor pointed it out...she has been working on getting my elbows properly aligned, so I am wondering know if the pain could be from me doing things wrong for so long.

    prolonged, poor biomechanics, especially in weight-bearing exercise like yoga (even more so if you're holding weight-bearing positions for a while) can definitely contribute to joint pain. Ask you yoga instructor if there are modifications you can make to decrease the amount of stress on your wrists without completely knocking them out of the equation (you'll still want to build strength and stability in them) things like bending your knees or shiftin your weight back into your legs a little more in poses like plank, downward facing dog, chatturanga, or upward facing dog (I find these were always the ones to give me the most trouble with my wrists.)

    Keep an eyes out for sharp, burning pain, numbness or tingling as those can be indicators of carpal tunnel, and that's bad news bears.

    Get your doc to check you out but be mindful--sometimes GP's will just give you a write off "carpal tunnel" diagnosis as they are not as specialized in the diagnostics of soft tissue pain/damage. Be wary if you are JUST given a prescription without any kind of stretching/strengthening as rehab. If this is what happens, I would suggest strongly seeing a sports medicine doctor, a well-trained massage therapist, or a physiotherapst--usually you can find one if not all three at a sports injury clinic, at home in Toronto the one I went to was called Athlete's Care. (I don't know if you're seeing your GP or a specialist, btw, I just thought I would caution regardless)

    Also, ICE. Ice ice ice ice ice. There may not be any signs of gross swelling in your wrist, but icing directly after exercises (particularly ewight bearing ones on your wrists) will help to decrease more minute swelling that might be in the area.
