Put on weight with anti-depressants?

I'm starting on citalopram hydrobromide (20mg) tomorrow... is it true that it'll make me put weight on again?

I'm on 40mg at the moment and still managing to lose weight. But when I first started them I put on like 30/40lbs or so not sure if it was due to the comfort eating with my depression or the meds but it came on. As long as you watch what you eat and carry on with exercise etc I imagine you'll be fine

Welbrutrin is less apt to cause weight gain.
  • I heard some anti-depressants make you lose weight

Since I started taking Celexa, my weight loss has not only halted...but I've been GAINING weight and having a hell of a time keeping it off. I'm on 40mgs per day now and trying to ween myself down to 20 and eventually 0. Hope the same thing doesn't happen to you.

I went on the same pills last summer and had a noticeable gain, but that was almost certainly down to the comfort eating I was doing because of the reasons I was put on them.

I was put back on them a week ago but this time am sticking to proper eating and training. Add me if you want me to keep you updated with how it goes.

Part of the reason I'm back on mine is the stress of losing the weight... do you think so long as I stick to my plans and don't binge, continue exercising, I should be ok? And thanks will do!

Did you change your diet in any way when you went on the meds?

personally I noticed a huge gain (2 and a half stone in 4 months) when I took citalopram but it must be different for everyone. Try talking to your doctor about the possible side effect of weight gain! x

I had a HUGE weight gain with them and I kept switching to different kinds. When I got off them, I lost 30lbs nearly overnight. I wasnt changing my diet though I was still eating pretty poorly.

Many antidepressants can cause weight gain but I haven't found that to be true. Talk to your doc about your concerns; give it a try and see how your body responds. There are many meds if a change is needed.

    Good luck!

I had no problems on Zoloft. My energy level has actually increased since I switched to Pristiq.

No. I'm actually eating better now and working out more than I ever have in my life. The fat just seems to want to stay put and multiply. I know I have to stop taking it if I want to make any real progress.

Some meds will make you hungrier and some people don't eat when depressed so the combo of more appetite and not being in depression can lead to more food intake. You can counter that by really sticking to your budget. The actual metabolic affects of the drugs is minimal.

Seeing him in 2 weeks, because I wasn't keen to go on the pills at all (I guess I felt like I was giving in). So... if there's a big weight gain while I'm at my goals, I'll ask him what I can do.
