90% Peanuts? even though true of "conventional" PB's, why in the world do you say that?
"made from Peanuts" as first ingredients...WTF does that mean? you mean it's not just ground peanuts? Why imply differently here? again, WTF?
My question I guess is were those requirments for the awesomeness that is Jif to join the feel good shelf at your local grocery store?

"Based on Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, peanut butter must contain at least 90 percent peanuts. Also, natural sweeteners, salt and stabilizers, such as hydrogenated oil, can be used in peanut butter and can be found in regular Jif peanut butter products. Jif Natural peanut butter spread is classified as a peanut butter spread because, although it contains 90% peanuts, it is stabilized with palm oil, which is outside of the definition for regular peanut butter."

cool, thanks. So natural "shortening" is not ok, but artificial is... Why not just use lard to begin with?0 -
Because natural lard tends to go rancid fairly quick.0
-
I use Crazy Richards natural peanut butter. Just peanuts not even added salt. Yum.0

Try and eat true natural peanut butter...peanuts and salt and that's it.0

If you take it out of the jar, stir it up really well and then put it back in the jar it doesn't separate again (at least not in a LONG while.) Just saying that true natural is best but everyone has to eat what they like.0 -

In the UK anything that contains nuts (even bags of peanuts) have to state 'May Contain Nuts' as there are quite a few people with nut allergies who have quite a severe reaction including death (which is quite severe) It also have to state whether things are made in an environment that could contain nuts as well, even if there are no nuts in the product.
I do giggle every time I read that on bags of nuts and always have to say aloud, ' I hope they do contain nuts'.
Don't know if you have the same problem in the US0 -

Yes, you don't have to frig it if you eat it up within a normal frame time. And once it's stirred, it doesn't separate..at least for my family and how we eat peanut butter.0 -

Yes...it always makes me giggle!!! Bag of almonds "may contain nuts"...shocker!!!0 -
I buy Smuckers Natural Creamy PB. Label says "peanuts" under ingredients. It doesn't say to refrigerate after opening, so I don't, and I just don't worry about the oil - I either pour it off or just scoop it out without stirring.0

This made me giggle. I love the Natural Skippy (it's exactly the same but usually a few cents cheaper)
Must keep in mind that the FDA doesn't approve of vitamins either.
So yes, to them, artificial and hydrogenated and god-only-knows-what-that's-made-of is fine but they haven't decided if just eating nuts is OK :P *smh*
call me a conspiracy theorist, but it just seems that the companies that make all the weird chemicals get approvals because they HAVE to be tested for safety first.
Real oils and such don't need to be..
btw, the natural Skippy with honey is super yum and exatly same amount of calories, etc0 -
I don't like the consitency of PB after you pour off the oil. It gets too hard to spread.
And yes, I'm difficult to please with my PB...0 -
You could always make your own peanut butter. I just buy the unsalted, dry roasted peanuts and put them in a food processor until they are the correct consistency. Nothing else is required and then your peanut butter is just 100% peanuts.
Also, you can add other flavoring if you want and avoid all of the other fillers. So, occasionally, I'll add dark chocolate or honey.0 -
I dump natural peanut butter into a bowl, stir it well, then put it back into the jar. It doesn't separate again.
PB without additives like sugar and palm oil tastes so much better to me.0 -
I love that peanut butter you get from the grinder in the health food store.0
