Water flavoring

What do you all think of MIO, Crystal Lite, that sort of thing? Tap water in our town tastes like butt and bottled water is expensive. Anyone have any healthy solutions other than lemon/lime juice?

Replies

  • Not exactly the "healthy" solution, but I find if I go too long without getting a 'fix' of a sweet drink I go crazy and drink 6 cans of pepsi. Anyway! So once in awhile I drink water with half a tablespoon of good host iced tea mix. It's only like 9 calories. A little on the weak side but does the trick. I find it better than the alternates that have fake sugar or other crap in it.

I've heard good things about MIO though.

If it helps you drink enough water, the benefits far outweigh the risks.

Personally I'm not a fan of the flavorings...just tastes off to me (and some of them upset my stomach). I'd go for fruit in the water...there are some good ideas here: http://www.theyummylife.com/recipes/251/Easy+Fruit+&+Herb+Flavored+Water and if you google it, there's a TON of "recipes"

I'd just make a pitcher of it in the morning and then drink it all day. Have you tried filtering the water? We use a PUR water filter tank thing in the fridge and it makes ours taste better.
  • I use flavorings all the time, even in my bottled water. Sometimes it's just nice to have variety. :drinker:
  • Love Mio actually, they just need more flavors

I don't drink water without flavoring. I use Crystal Light Energy - wild strawberry. It may not be the best for me, but at least I have been able to grab the water in the fridge (with flavoring) and skipping on the soda. If I did not use it, I would not be drinking any water.

I like the Lipton Tea and Honey packets, but they are 10 calories for a packet, so you have to log them!!

I do the same thing. I was a 2 liter a day soda drinker. Tried going straight water, but never could do it. The flavorings help me get it down.
  • Get a Zero water filter. abt $35 for the pitcher. Replacement filters are in the $15 range.
If you want flavor, add squeeze of lemon or lime. Or a slice or two of fresh ginger. Or squeeze 1/2 an orange into a quart of water.
I drink Crystal light now and then, but find it is too strong and sweet mixed as directed. I'll use 1/2 a single serve pouch in a quart of water. Still get some flavor but a lot less acid & sweetners.

For a sweet taste, I go with the sugar free Hawaiian Punch singles. (10cal) I also like the Propel Zero grape flavor.

I LOVE Mio but I limit myself to one to two glasses of it a day and the rest is plain water.

drinking mio fruit punch right now! I like it. Also, you can use a Brita pitcher to get the gross tap taste out. That's what I do at home. At work we have a poland springs bubbler and I just refill a water bottle all day.
  • i just bought some Mio this mornin for the first time.....it tastes good, but i find it has a peculiar smell....like....can't describe it. but it tastes good lol

I use Mio a lot... but wish they had more flavors. Only one I like is fruit punch. I take 3 water bottles to work, 1 with Mio and 2 without. Then when I come home I have 1 more bottle of water, sometimes with Mio and sometimes without.

Artificial sweeteners are pretty horrible for you but one of my favourite treats for water is to put in the juice of an entire lime and the flesh of a passion fruit if I can find them. If you have both together it's absolutely delicious. Add some chia seeds and drink up :) delicious and so good for you! The lime and passionfruit work out to about 27 calories. I have a hard time finding passion fruit sometimes in my area but the farmers market sometimes has some.

When I was on well water I would buy water in a 3 gallon jug and refill it at the grocery (very cheap) and then pour it into a pitcher to keep in the fridge for cold good water. Or you can refill your water bottles. or even better fill several pba(?) safe bottles that you fill up and keep those in the fridge.

I've used MIO, well the Walmart version as it's about $1 cheaper at times. Most times, I'll add slices of lemon and/or lime to the water.

I hate tap water, but am getting to quite like filtered water. Keeping the jug in the fridge so its cold helps too :)
  • fruit herbal teas can be made iced. Also, try other fruits in your water besides lemon/lime. I've tried oranges, watermelon, and strawberries. I didn't care for the strawberry so much but the watermelon was surprisingly good. But if the water enhancers keep you drinking water and you can handle them, better than soda I say. Personally, I can't take the artificial sugar, gives me a migraine.

I like Crystal Light Energy, I use twice the recommended water (to spread out the calories) and add (real) lemon juice to it.
