Does fitbit have a heart rate monitor built in?

I have been doing a little research on the fitbit and I have heard great reviews. All I can seem to figure out is that it burns calories, but how does it track those? Does it have a built in HRM or can I use one to work with that? I really need to track my work-out calories via a HRM, I find that I have been listing too many calories burned vs what I actually burned.

Any ideas or suggestions from users?

There's no HRM in the Fitbit. Based on the metrics you enter for your profile, including your activity level, Fitbit estimates your calorie burn based on activity level (mostly number of steps in a period of time).

    See: http://help.fitbit.com/customer/portal/articles/176129-how-do-you-calculate-calories-burned-

Edit: Yes, you can use an HRM with Fitbit. For example, I use a Polar H7 connected to the Digifit app on my iPhone. Digifit sends activity information to Fitbit, which incorporates that activity when it syncs to MFP, giving me a calorie adjustment (either positive or negative) depending on how active I've been on that given day.

Have a look at the new STRIIV Play. Similar to fitbit but more game like.

A glorified pedometer isn't sufficient for those of us who engage in activities such as biking, skiing, swimming, and other non-step-based exercise.

    Just imagine achieving fitness-device nirvana:
An upgraded version of the FitBit/Jawbone devices and apps, each of which still record data into MyFitnessPal (and vice-versa) as they do now -- but ALSO incorporating heart-rate monitoring and/or skin temperature changes so as to calculate more-accurate caloric expenditure from a broader range of activities. I.e., NOT having to use a separate HRM device.

If a good proportion of us called on the FitBit and Jawbone manufacturers to provide such a version, it might happen sooner. It will HAVE to happen, eventually. The technology is there, but hasn't been put together as yet in a single device. Hell, I'd pay more, for that!
  • Hope something like that comes out soon.
