I know, my Canadian wife cleared that up.0 -
I am, sometimes, the Canadian Hulk. LOL! Well, at least of grammar etc. What's most annoying to me is when my U.S co-workers, who fail at basic sentence construction, choose to correct me on my British spelling. Then I go take my angst for a workout. LOL!0

Before trashing Canadian-British English spelling and usage, please American friends, consider HONEY BOO BOO. Oh yes, you heard me... now that's "good American English".
People in glass houses....0 -
Yes, Australians use (or they should) British English, and the built in spell checks get it wrong.
I adjust mine but there can be a section of a document that is considered US English. I don't get it.
Luckily, I'm proficient at my written language and can disregard spell checkers that aren't correct. Plenty of people aren't clear on spelling, so elect to trust them when they're really just a guide.0 -
I'm American and live in Canada for over 5 years and counting.
Me too! I don't use those lousy Canadian spellings though.
Also, it's "soda." Yeah, I said it!
No, it's pop.
you might be correct if it was the 1950's.0 -

Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop.... Do you want a pop? It's pop damn it.0 -

Even pop knows what its name is, just put your ear up to it. There's no snap and crackles in it, it's just pop.
....just to clarify I'm talking about the drink and not my grandfather :happy:0 -

I dont understand why the majority of the world has to change cause americans spell things funny :P and why cant we organise a standardized measuring system so we no longer have to convert pounds, kilo's and stone, inches, miles cm's etc? Really it would just make more sense in my opinion0

Yes the lines annoy me.
And I hope google translate copes with my Australian spelling.
I get a little concerned that people won't be able to read me in foreign languages unless I use USAvian0 -

Truthfully, and I'm speaking as an Amercian, the entire English language is just bizarre. There are so many contradictions and alternate spellings for the same sounds. Then there's the issue of the same spellings having different sounds. It's amazing that we actually have learned to write in English!0

Oh Honey, don't bring the economy into this... China owns your *kitten*. It has been decades since your economy has been "the" economy. Canada's economy has been outperfoming the US economy, in fact, two months ago, Canada rose to the top five in world economic freedom ranking as the US plummeted to 18th rank.0 -
As an American, I truly apologize...we don't all mean to be "ornery". I love the Brits, Canadians, and Aussies! If I could, I'd change our "English" version to yours, but it's out of my hands. I wish our politicians would put us on the metric system, but unfortunately, there are a lot of undereducated people here that seemingly, have problems with just the basics. But politicians are...politicians, and I don't see any changes coming. So, from one of "us", I do once again, apologize for any obnoxious behavior on our part....0

if canada had more population than one of our states they would probably matter on the world stage. but the USA still matters more than any other country. and although china's economy is on the rise it is not assured they will pass us. they said the same thing about Japan in the 80s and there are lots of indicators that China is about to start having the same troubles as Japan did.0 -

its definitely a better run economy but it it is easier to run things on smaller scales. but my point is small economies do not get to dictate to the world. thats why the world uses US dollars and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. and thats why everyone should use our version of English.0 -

Yes, of course, the Honey Boo-Boo version. Let's leave it at that shall we?0 -

honey boo boo and her clan have invented an entire new version of the language. im sure you are aware that language evolves. we would hardly recognize english speakers of bygone eras.
at least the american version isnt littered with aboots and ehs.0 -
Truth be told, they say "aboat" and "hey" up here more than "aboot" or "eh." Though you usually have to be listening pretty hard, or talking to someone with a thick northern accent. The main thing that I hear is the difference between words like "pasta" and "Mazda" and "garage." There's more of a short-A sound in the Canadian version (like "bat"), where I will say it with an "ahhh" sound (like "not"). I usually find most differences charming though...my husband calls our dog "Meggie" though her name is "Maggie."
As for pop vs. soda, soda is a noun (i.e., an actual physical object). Pop is a verb or onomatopeia. However, both are irrelevant since I only order water or beer. :drinker:0 -
It annoys me when it tells me I've spelled "cheque" wrong.0
