My heart

Well... Now that my Avm brain scare is over, I have been diagnosed with an enlarged left atrium. I've had borderline high blood pressure for four years, but the doctors always blame it on being nervous.
I was put on a diuretic 6 mos ago, which has enabled me to run again and get healthier. I saw my chiropractor Monday and he flipped out. He could not believe a dr. Put me on this med without knowing WHY I have such serious pitting edema. (It went away for awhile, but now it is back - I have nearly 1/2 inch pitting in my front calves.).
SO I went to the dr. And she was frustrated with me when my resting blood pressure was 100 and my pulse was 70. She tried to brush it off and asked me why I wanted to be put on blood pressure medicine. I told her that I absolutely DO NOT want to go on these meds! That I was only there to find out why I have such severe edema.
So she humored me and scheduled a sonogram of my heart. Today I learned that I have an enlarged left atrium! She ordered blood tests, lung X-rays, and an EKG. Then she referred me to a cardiologist.
I also have a persistent hack ( that my mom and aunt have nagged me about during our phone calls from hours away) that could be symptomatic of heart issues. It seems to all be coming together...
Anyone know how serious this could be and what to watch for?
