I am watching the Discovery channel currently, and they've said that apparently cutting your caloric intake and putting your body in starvation mode actually slows the aging process. They've done studies with rats that shows those who eat less live longer. Counterintuitive, isn't it? There's even a society of people called the Calorie Restriction Society who live their lives according to this premise, to try to live longer. They interviewed a guy that says he doesn't eat more than 2000 calories in a day and eats as little as 1600 - which of course sounds like a lot to me lol. Anyway I thought this was an interesting tidbit that might provide an extra little boost of motivation. Counting your calories may help you live longer!

Yes! I think I caught the same show! It is quite interesting, but on the most fanatic end of it, is life a touch boring? Did you see the family that eats mainly lentils and seeds... :grumble:

I think not overtaxing the body just makes sense. I often think of eating too much as being akin toclogging a food disposal unit... put the right amount in, and everything runs efficiently; put too much, and the system breaks down.

I just finished watching that show...they said the average American eats 4000 calories / day. FOUR THOUSAND :noway:

So by cutting his calories in half to 2000 and calling that starvation? That was very misleading on their part...I'm eating 1200, so I guess I'm on ultra-starvation diet?

If the average person eats 4000 cals and you reduce it to 2000, OF COURSE you're going to live longer: its healthier!

i just joined mfp last week, and when i started really thinking about what i was eating, it was easily in the 4000 range some days. its awful how unaware we are about what we put in our mouths! i really never thought about, and now i regret how flippantly i ate a double western bacon cheeseburger. nothing good in that at all.

I agree, I also just at what I wanted and realized I did eat way to many calories. Just by paying attention to what I have put into my mouth had made a big difference. I love this site.

I love this channel, but I also think it has a lot to do with what you eat. If you are a whopper a day person, there go the calories in one suiiting, or a veggie lover, you could probable eat all day. I think it has a lot to do with moving as well and not drinking, smoking.... you get the picture. Thank you so much for the wonderful information.....
