Starting A Lifting Regime

I've had personal training in the past but can't afford it now so when I join a gym next month I want to start a regime where I can progress on my own. I need help with how to work on my upper body (I think I'm confident with what I need to do for the rest.)

I think I would like to lift heavy-ish so I can get rid of the flab on my arms and get some definition. How do you go about planning a regime with a view to progressing and not ending up lifting little weights and getting nowhere.

Hopefully this makes sense....

A 5x5 Programme is excellent starting point.

    Starting Strength - http://startingstrength.com/

    Strong Lifts- http://stronglifts.com/

Both will give you a excellent base to start with to gain strength burn fat and change body composition.

Excellent advice, but I would also like to say that you should buy the starting strength book AND the video regardless of the program you choose. The advice/form information is invaluable.
  • Thanks that's really useful.

... How do you go about planning a regime ...

Hitler's first attempt was the Beer Hall Putsch in Munich. It wasn't successful though so you might not want to go that route.

    So many times over.....THIS!!!

I have found so much incredibly good information on bodybuilding.com and can't stress enough how much it helps as a source for great information! :D

But, you know, the BEST information can be found on these forums! (Insert sarcasm font).

To make it more domestic, there is always the Continental Congress model. Sjonhnny FTW!!

I figured he was looking for a more dramatic change.
  • It's also a good idea to get started with some very basic strength training movements to help build some muscular strength before you begin training heavier at the gym.

Not really needed. My wife read Starting Strength and walked into the gym doing barbell back squats, deadlifts, bench press, overhead press, and rows along with assisted pull up machine.
