Anyone had a hernia?

So, I've self-diagnosed myself with a possible hernia. Dull pain in the lower abdomen that extends into both groins. It's irritating but not always painful. I went to the doctor and I have an ultrasound soon to confirm. If it is a hernia and I have to have surgery, how long before I'm 100%?

That doesn't sound good at all. I'd go somewhere for a 2nd opinion.

Depends on what kind you have as their are various kinds and how big the tear is,I've had one before but it was called gilmores groin which needed surgery,as in recovery time theirs not set time frame as recovery can vary from person to person.

I just was confirmed last week that I have an umbilical hernia, right above my belly button. Doesn't hurt thankfully.
Consultation with the Dr. Nov 12 to talk about the surgery. I've read that full recovery after surgery is 4-6 weeks, listen to your body and keep excercise light.
I plan on doing no more heavy weights until the surgery, just cardio mainly, and keeping the diet in check.
Not looking foward to the next 2 months...I have a New Years cruise coming up, I'm at my goal weight but I was really wanting to focus on building some more muscle in the next 2 months....so much for any strength gains I have made...sigh...
    Best of luck to you!

I've had a left inguinal hernia that was rather large, took a few months to recover. Also had an umbilical hernia, recovered in about 6 weeks.

You will be on a lifting restriction for a period of time post-surgery, and you should abide by it.
  • My hubby had a hernia that appeared as a bulge in the region below the ribcage and above the belly button. Initially, it was small but it began to develop bigger. It was heard to find a good Hernia Hospital for the treatment, but finally found one in Toronto. The name of the hospital is ShouldIce (http://www.shouldice.com/) The treatment gone well. They said he would heal within a week, but it took three weeks. Anyways, he is fine now.

I had hernia surgery in April (left side) inguinal hernia and now I have to have surgery in 3 weeks for another inguinal hernia on the right side. I know it took me awhile to get my strength back (only walked for weeks after surgery for exercise and was on weight restriction). I guess my question is, will I ever be able to push myself to the limit while exercising anymore? I'm afraid after having this surgery that I won't be able to lift weights, do squats etc without getting another hernia! I'm tired of family saying that I exercise too much and that I'm doing something wrong. I don't lift more than 50 lbs! I'm afraid to do any ab routines. Obviously my ab muscles are weak but why? Will
I ever be able to make them strong without having a reoccurring hernia? Any suggestions??

I work at a hospital, it is generally 4-6 weeks postoperative till your back to LIGHT duties. You cannot lift anything over 10lbs during this time, most people find that after 6 weeks they still need to be very careful, you don't want a repeat hernia.
*These are general instructions for the average patients' expected outcome, your surgeon will go over the plan for you*

I self diagnosed myself with a hernia about a year and a half ago. I saw the doctor this spring & he confirmed that it was an epigastic hernia. I just had surgery on Wednesday. I am told I'll be able to start cardio within a few weeks but absolutely no lifting for 6-8 weeks. That included everything from squats, crunches, push-ups & any/all weight lifting. Restricted to 10 lbs or less during that time period & then have to ease Into weights... Lifting too soon can result in another hernia.
