Sugar Confusion

Just about everyday after I have entered my food and view my report I seem to exceed my daliy sugar limit. The marjority of the sugar are from naturally occuring foods like, cottage cheese, wheat bread, fruit and veg, I try to limit the processed sugars as much as possible but being a chocoholic I sometimes I indulge to my desire. If I were to seperate the naturally occuring sugars and processed sugars in my food dairy I would not go over my sugar limit per day.

Long term I would like to eliminate all processed sugar from my diet, for now I have cut out soda and sugary fruit drinks.

So with that said here's my question, do I need to limit my naturally occuring sugars to stay within or very close (if gone over) to my limit?

I don't worry about naturally occurring sugars. I have had to cut out processed sugar (except for rare treats) for health reasons and that seems to be good enough to take care of my health problems. Having to cut out foods that have natural sugar like dairy and fruit seems pretty extreme to me.

I wouldn't really overly worry about your sugar consumption unless you have have a medical condition that requires you to do so or if you're eating lbs of candy and soda a day

Because the food companies seem to think they need to put sugar in EVERYTHING, going over your sugar limit is inevitable. Also, the limit set by MFP may not be the correct one for you. I have never had a day that I was under my sugar limit. It is one of my goals too, but unfortunately the food industry counts on us all being sugar addicts so they can make money. That's why so many are overweight and suffering from Diabetes.

When i was seeing a dietician she told me not to worry about fruits from sugars and ones that naturally occur in dairy, but to limit my intake of added sugars to 35 grams/day.
that said, i dont really worry about sugar now and it hasnt hurt my weight loss at all.
  • I wouldn't worry about it as long as you're healthy foods.

First, the information in the database isn't necessarily correct, particularly for whole foods.
Second, the "limits" are suggestions, not hard and fast rules. If the suggested limits don't fit with your goals, you could figure out what you want your "limits" to be and then manually adjust them.
  • Consider the source of the sugars (if they are natural from fruits and veggies also consider the benefit of the fiber) and also consider the amount of activity you are putting in through the day.

Ultimately it all boils down to quality calories in and total calories burned.

Thank you all for comments, they have helped with my confusion! I will continue eating stuff and keep the processed stuff to a minimum.
