Frozen meals

I know, I know. They are loaded with sodium, carbs and preservatives that aren't very good for me. But sometimes, they are just too convenient not to pass up as a take-to-work lunch option. So, with that in mind, I'm looking for opinions on the "healthiest" ones - the ones with a good amount of protein that aren't insanely processed carb heavy.

Cooking is obviously the best option, but back when I ate frozen meals I really liked Amy's! they have some really good burritos!

I fill my deep freeze with a Kashi meals and their Kashi steamer bags. About as healthy and natural as you can get for a frozen meal.
  • The weight watcher's ones or lean cuisine ones are really good and not all that terrible for you!

The easiest, and cheaper option I've found is cooking and freezing my own meals, cook a bunch of chicken, turkey, whatever, one night and portion it out into baggies or tupperware with some veggies, freeze, then either take out the night before so its thawed or bring it the work the next day and don't put it in the freezer, warm it up in the microwave and there you go, a much better optioon for less money that took just as long. Crockpot recipes and soups are even more fantastic for this because you can literalyl do anything else you need to do while it cooks!

If you look at the labels they are all about the same really. I agree with the peeps that say to make your own and freeze them. You can control everything including sodium and quality.

Probably not what you're looking for, but make your own frozen meals. Make large portions of things over the weekend and then freeze it in prepackage meal sized portions. I find that most starches don't freeze as well, but it only takes 5 minutes to nuke a potato or keep cooked rice or pasta in your fridge in smaller portions. This way you can control the ingredients and have the convenience.
  • I'd say go with what these people said. Cook your own and freeze foremost.
Then, there's a few options depending on how many calories you can allow yourself. I like the Amy's organic ones, Lean cuisine, and Ethnic Gourmet. All of these fall within the 400 and under calorie range. If I think I need more, I'll make a salad or throw in carrots and hummus.

Working 60 hours a week plus being a full-time mom to 3 young kids = there's not nearly enough time to do alot of cooking. I'm barely getting enough laundry done for everyone to have clean underwear and school uniforms!!!!

I like Kashi. No burritos. I'll buy Healthy Choice when they are on sale - I like those steamers.

I have no qualms about sodium. I love it, don't bloat easily, drink lots of water, and don't have high b/p. That all being said, Lean Cuisine is my go-to brand, and I try to go for the ones with 15+ grams of protein. My current favorites are their chicken/artichoke/spinach panini, and their swedish meatballs on egg noodles.

If you like some that don't have as much protein, you could always have baggies of diced chicken on hand (Perdue shortcuts, or homemade) to mix in extra for more protein. It helps absorb some of the ones that have too much sauce, too. :)

My personal favorite is Lean Cuisine Spinach Mushroom pizza. Reasonable in the carb dept and pretty high in protein.
