Strength/Resistance training...where do I start?

Ok pretty simple question I know but was just after some advice/stories from others where they started with this and how they built it up/how it worked over time...

All I've been doing really is cardio...gym and kickboxing and while it has worked many have said to tone up and help lose that belly fat this is the way to go....

So advice from anyone, how do you go about this? Any exercise regimes?....anything would be of help to me :).
