Is this a dumb present to give my boyfriend?

It's my boyfriend's birthday next week and I was really struggling with what to buy him. We have been dating on and off for 4 years but we now live together. He doesn't like to spoil himself really and sees a lot of things as 'a waste of money'. He is extremely picky when it comes to everything!

So anyway I went out today and bought him a pin hole camera set (about 40 bucks) and a puzzle thing which I think he might enjoy, he has a lot of time on his hands lately and he's into hobby kinds of things. I also bought some really nice art paper and I'm going to do him a drawing of our time in the rocky mountains we had recently (a sketch from a photo)

I think the best option though would have been to get him a nice bottle of scotch, some cool shot glasses and whiskey stones :I but now I have this other gift I can't return. I'm really broke this week (as he knows) so he won't be expecting anything too expensive.

Was my gift okay? I really want him to have a wonderful birthday....Also we're both in our mid to late 20s.

I think the best of all will be the drawing!
My daughter is an accomplished artist, and when she was a senior in high school, for my birthday she gave me a gorgeous, professionally framed painting she'd done, depiciting a view of a lake from a spot along the shore where I run. It's one of my very favorite gifts, ever!

Yeah, I am kinda here. The gifts may be perfect, not for me, but for your boyfriend. Just saw the camera and wondered why.

I think your gift is better than the scotch. With that he'd just drink it and it'd be gone. Yours seems more meaningful :)

Anytime someone takes time and money to get a gift for me, it's all good. He is a lucky man.

A pinhole camera...as in a film camera that uses a very small "pinhole" instead of a lens.
Makes for long exposures with limited sharpness and all sorts of nifty lo-fidelity effects...if you're in to that sort of thing, which I am.

Your gift is much better than the scotch, glasses and stones. If he doesn't appreciate that then maybe it is time for another "off again" period in your relationship.

it's stones that you freeze and use instead of putting ice in your whiskey and watering it down

Whiskey Stones, basically ice cubes that don't water down your drink. http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/ba37/

Clearly, you've paid attention to what he likes and chose gifts that show those things are important to you.
Big win on the consideration points.
