weight loss alternatives

I am wondering if anyone has used any weight loss alternatives, such as meds or sugery. I have an appointment with my doctor to talk about some options, and I'm wondering what others have used/heard of...etc, and what your thoughts are.

personally, I would use it as an absolute last resort when all else has completely failed. And i mean failed after a real honest effort, nut just putting forth a so-so effort then stopping because it's hard.
I say this for a reason. I have personally known 3 people that had a gastric bypass and one person that had liposuction. Literally all four of them are back to their old weight (or real close to it.) Yes, they lost a lot at first. But the problem is, they used the surgery as a shortcut.
Once you get rid of the fat due to the surgery, you absolutely HAVE to change your habits. you need to eat healthier, exercise, and use portion control. If you don't change your habits, then you will end up right back where you started. And if you can't control the impulses and urges before, chances are you aren't going to magically be able to control them after. matter of fact, they all seemed to care less because they were smaller again, thus making it worse.
I'm not saying this to be mean. I'm saying it because I think people should fully understand what their role will need to be after the surgery.0 -
Well. Im not an expert but I honestly believe it has to be a lifestyle change. There is no magic pill and surgery well unless you change your habits..its not going to help either. 2 reasons why...My sister had gas-bypass surgery...Did not change her habits and is back to her old weight again, and absolutley that is dangerous. My bff met with a nutritionist who gave her some shot she gives herself in the leg and restricted her calories. I am doing MFP and working out everyday and I have lost more than she has so far... So I guess its all about hard work. Hope it helps and best of luck on whatever you decide.0

ya theres a guy in my bowling league who had it done and he's still huge. People don't seem to realize that even though your stomach is smaller you still have to change your eating habits. He sits there for all three hours and grazes on french fries, and pizza and lord know what else. its the same amount of calories and fat whether you eat in in 3 mins or in 3 hours. so yes while his stomach is smaller he still eats just as many calories in a given day as he would eat before hand.0

I agree with everyone else, no to surgery or "lose weight quick" things. If you think about it, you probably didn't gain weight overnight, so it will take time and a lifestyle change to lose it and keep it off. Anytime I have ever tried to do it with some fast diet, I have gained the weight back. Now that I am making complete changes to my eating habits, types of foods, and exercise, it's coming off, and I know it will stay off this time if I continue to look at it as a forever change, not a just until I lose the weight change.
Hang in there, it will come off, and you will be able to keep it off if you are the one working at it- You'll appreciate every pound lost a little more than you would if it drops off because of some surgery or pill.

Just to clarify.....I am (thankfully) nowhere near the weight that would qualify me for any kind of surgery. Thank you all for your thoughts on this! It's good to know that people are passionate about making a lifestyle change. I plan on getting a referral for a dietician from my doctor on Friday, and maybe that will help.0

I have tried Xenical. I use it to keep me in check. Because of the way the medication works you have to eat a low fat diet.

That's the way that Alli works. My doctor is leaning towards that, but I want to see what I can do on my own for a bit. Under her close supervision of course! LOL0

Something for all the nay-sayers to keep in mind = )
I agree that the weight loss surgeries aren't a 'quick fix' BUT if you have commited to makeing lifestyle changes, and if you've stayed on track with weight loss so far and have lost at least 50% of your desired goal, I think liposuction could be beneficial.
Once a fat cell has formed in your body it never goes away, it only gets smaller. That's one of the reasons it's so easy to regain weight after it's been lost. Those cells are just sitting there wating to be filled >< Liposuction removes the cells, and should therefor make it a bit harder to backslide.
That's the only instance in which I could see weight loss surgery being beneficial. Not as a quick fix to losing weight, but as a preventative measure for regaining it.0 -
I have two appt'w with doctors for reducing my thighs, even when I was 130 lbs I still had this problem area. Now with me not being able to exercise like I used to I am considering giving this a try. There is a new liposuction surgery that has come out that does not have anything to do with surgery, or girdles or bruising or swelling. I have this appt on Monday at 11am, depending on cost & what he suggests I will go from there. Has anyone had any type of lipo done? Any suggestions for a women over 50? It amazes me to see how weight does come on after this age, yikes.0
