Movie Theatre Popcorn (the tubs)

Ok, I am going to the movies alone tomorrow, and am going to see 2 movies. I hardly ever go to the theatres, so I consider it a delectable treat for my: a) quitting smoking and b) gettin back to pre-quit weight.
I am going to indulge-no matter what- on the large (and freely refillable) popcorn, WITHOUT the squirted goo on top. I will also be getting 2 large diet cokes to (match?).
My question is: How much am I indulging? Livestrong says about 1200 calories per large tub for Regal Cinemas, but they are not clear on if that includes the additional squirt (or movie theatre touch) to the popcorn, or as is out of the popper. Does anyone know the answer to this question? Please give me sources if any, or just some generic facts.

Congrats on quitting smoking!!0

Enjoy the movies, enjoy the popcorn, log it and eat a lighter meal just before the movie to offset the "indulgence".0

Popcorn.. without the layered is butter is just.. OMG WHY NOT?! If you are going to indulge, might as well :P
Anyway, for microwavable popcorn EXTRA butter, which should be about hmm a medium tub? is about 500 cals..
So.. give take, a large cinema tub would be somewhere above that.. Nevertheless, popcorn is a good source of fibre, you can't just gain weight on eating tubs of it alone (unless you eat a surplus of your weeks worth of calories in one setting, if so, then i don't know, but highly unlikely)
So no worries, enjoy, indulge, and just work it off the next day
Congrats on quitting smoking! that's quite a feat.. a feat i wish my dad could do.. sigh0 -
I kept getting hung up on the word squirt.
Great job on quitting smoking!!0 -

Tub and a refill?
its called a "forget to log food" day0 -
I've always loved that theater popcorn but they always make me sick! I eat it sometimes anyway:ohwell: Im with the guy that said that would be a "forget to log" day for me...0

I've eaten a large bag to myself (it comes in bags here in Canada, tub is a foreign concept, so I don't know about size comparison)... Anyway, just eat the popcorn and enjoy it. Who cares about the goo? My sister and I used to share the large bag (and get the refill) and make them put not just the normal squirts of butter, but extra butter.

lol....Sunday is football day and I have a guy a couple doors down from me coming over and drinkin beer and salsa and whatnot. I can work off that day, but I think if i gain a pound back, I won't care. I deserve that pound ;-)0 -

Tub in America= about 4 Litres, 5 if overflowed in metric terms. For some theatres, you could use the tub to wash a truck.0 -

Went to America for a holiday, requested a small drink somewhere, and got a cup larger than the large sized drinks back home in New Zealand. I was like O_o0 -
Awesome page. I like quantifiable data that is divisible, as I understand it better. Although each tub is not scientifically the same helping, it can help me estimate and put it into my diary as an item, with accurate accountability! Thanks!0 -
Just got back from the movie - a small non-buttered popcorn is around 400-500 calories - so the tub would likely be double or triple that...0

Popcorn has been my biggest indulgence since I started on MFP. My wife and I split a bag many nights and we've gone to several movies. The info is available, probably even the specific theatre, if it is a national chain.0

Regal has the worst popcorn. The calories are way up there and the aftertaste is so terrible I'd rather lick the bathroom floor. And that's without the butter. Cinemark has the best movie popcorn; they use canola oil, not coconut oil. At home I eat the Market Pantry kind.
You sometimes have to wonder why people buy the smaller sizes, because the price is about the same as the tub. And they often ask for butter too! I always share with someone, so the cost is cut in half. Heck, even four can share it given the refill.

Movie theatre popcorn........NOM NOM NOM!!
If its a very rare indulgence......go for it and don't think about the calories. And ENJOY!!!0 -

Congrats on both!! IDK what to estimate, but I know when I go to the amusement park and splurge on the popcorn tub I pretty much plan on that (plus vitamins) being my only food that day.0 -
My guess is that 1200 is an underestimation. It's a LOT. Just do it, consider it like a holiday...indulge, and then move on immediately afterwards. Whatever the calories are, if it's a one-off, I would forgo counting and just enjoy.0

I recall looking at the calorie content for a small theater popcorn in Canada and it was something like 500. I suspect 1200 is an underestimate since what you are talking about sounds roughly 4 times the size. Splurge and remember to drink lots of water later.0
