When it comes to weight management it is simply a matter of calorie balance/deficit/surplus. Depending on if you're maintaining/loosing/gaining. These calories can come from anywhere, including candy. Body composition and health are a different discussion.

I promise you the person eating 1200 calories of only junk does not feel as good as the person eating 1200 well balanced calories.

You just stick with the good food you are eating. People who continue to eat garbage, just less garbage, WILL gain any loss back... trust that.

All in moderation. I for one try to budget for my chocolate and I would say most of my food is quite good.

No they wont. If they stay within a balance or deficit of caloric intake they will not gain the weight back. They may not achieve the body composition they want or health they want, but they can manage their weight with only twinkies if they wanted to.

I can tell you from personal experience that I eat junk food, but I do think more consciously about it. I'm a pretty hefty guy still so I have 1960 calories a day to eat. A Snickers I think is 250 calories. I just try to limit how much junk food I eat. If you are going over, then you may want to cut back on portions a bit. If you don't have a food scale, definitely get one. I spent 5 bucks on a 2 Lb food scale. It helps quite a bit. I remember seeing this Bob Evans Mac and Cheese. The portion it had on the box was like 350 calories. I cut it in half by measuring it. It's all about portion control.

My calorie goal is high but I don't often eat junk food even though I have room to everyday. I figure the 600 calories I would eat in a quarter pounder won't be as delicious, filling, or make me feel as good as something I could make myself for the same amount of calories.

They may be eating more calories then you?

I eat between 1800-2000 calories a day.... and I can fit all that stuff in with room to spare.

It also depends on how calorie dense the foods are... the more calorie dense, the less food you can eat.

Right... 31 pounds gone, eat what I want mainly, and I've been maintaining since January without a pound gained back.

    Why you ask?

Because I lift weights and run between 2-5 miles a day... I didn't just lose the weight and go back to sitting like a bump on a log eating junk.

As long as you stay active during and after weightloss, the chance of it coming back is very slim.

I personally love Mtn Dew. I used to drink regular Mtn Dew, but I like it too much. I had to switch to Diet Mtn Dew. Maybe try to cut calories in other ways. I know diet soda is not as tasty as regular, but it may help you find a balance.

I wonder that, too, sometimes. I know I am better off with the good foods, but still... How do they eat all that junk and stay under their calorie goal. The people with a calorie goal of 2600, I get, but some people have a goal, close to mine and1300 and are still under with candy bars....

    Arg!

    That's life, I guess.

It also depends upon the daily/overall goals. I have my goal set to maintain weight, as I'm only 4 lbs over my ideal. This gives me 1960 calories per day - before any exercise. I try to eat just under my daily calories, so that I will slowly lose the weight. If I end up eating one or two of the fun-size candy bars left over from Halloween, so be it. Were I trying to lose 2 lbs per week, so that I'd be at 1200 calories (MFP min) - forget about it.
  • either they have a higher calorie goal, they are exercising, LIEING, or their metabolism is faster?

I occasionally have what some people would call "junk" (like a piece of chocolate, some ice cream, etc)... but when I eat it now, I have literally only a piece of chocolate, or a serving of ice cream (i measure!). Perhaps the people you are looking at are similar? Or, it could be that they pre-plan for them and eat around it.

It's hard to tell. I see it a lot too. But, I do notice that that's all they have. I've seen people that just eat candy for lunch, as an example. If that's what they want to do, that's their business. If I did that, I'd go over for the day, because I cannot just have candy for lunch, I'd have to actually also eat lunch.

I'm not sure why this is confusing. Do the math. Their calorie goal is 2000. They eat 1500 calories of junk and processed food. They're under their calorie goal.

For me it's about eating healthier not just eating less. People with a lot of junk food in their diary aren't going to be as healthy as those without. Sure, they may not be over their calorie target but that stuff isn't going to keep them going and nourish their bodies.

Just stick with what you are doing and don't worry about them. If you really want a candy bar then plan for it. Do an extra workout with that as your reward. I love ice cream. I try to save enough calories at the end of the day for a single serving of my favorite light cookies and cream ice cream. It's my way to indulge so I don't go on a binge during the day. If I know that at the end of the day my ice cream is there I can pass up the other "junk" without a second thought :)

yes, it is about calories in vs calories out, HOWEVER, those people eating crap are not really making themselves all that much healthier. They dont have as much energy as someone who eats healthy, their bodies do not perform as well and they do not have a general overall good feeling as someone that is eating properly. This isnt all just about losing weight or gaining, if thats what your trying to do. Its also about feeling better, looking great, living and being healthy. Your not gonna get healthy by eating crap...thats just a fact. I have no problem with people eating what they want...hell, I love a good bit of junk food from time to time but for me, I prefer eating healthy because of how great it makes me feel. If you are going over your calories by eating healthy, then just drop some of what your eating.

I've done this before, the loosing weight thing. I would cut out "bad" foods, eat only small quantities of "good" food and, shockingly, I couldn't keep that lifestyle up and gained everything back.

This time, armed with my newfound knowledge of TDEE/ Net Calories/ BMR/ etc, I decided to throw caution to the wind and eat reasonable portions of reasonable foods and not worry so much about it. I don't eat fried foods, cake, candy, pop all the time, but I do eat them. Completely without guilt, I might add! I've lost that 35 pounds in my ticker since July and this is the first time ever that I felt I knew how I did it and how to keep it off without it being an emotional and physical drain. This has been an exercise in learning what is going into my body and learning better ways to eat the foods that I like. :)

So, I had that fried fish the other day and will have a slice of cake today without feeling like I failed myself AND still revel in the fact that the scale is still dropping

TL;DR- They plan around the foods they want to eat and are hopefully happy and satisfied :)
  • Everybody is different. I used to work with a guy who had chips and Coke for lunch every day. Dude was skinny as a rail. That kind of stuff, and a lot of other junk food, is like crack cocaine for me. Once I go down that path, bad things happen. Just keep at it with your healthier foods, and cut down your portions, or exercise more, if you are going over your goal regularly.

sounds like their calorie goals are larger than yours. for instance, not everyone losing weight on this site is only eating 1200 calories. i personally am able to eat up to 2200 calories and still lose fat. that obviously means i have room in my diet for gummi bears if the need arises and i find myself surrounded by an angry mob of haribo gummi bears

It comes down to what a person's end goal is. I personally want to be healthier is I try to limit the 'bad" foods. I can have a higher volume of nutrient dense foods without exceeding my calories. Calorie dense food leave me hungry because I can not eat as much of them. I don't take an all or nothing approach. I thunk that would doom me to failure. But daily I try to take on step at a time towards a healthier lifestyle. I am also trying hard not to be critical if others because they maybe coming from a different starting point or might not have the same end goals as I do. But if asked I'll be more than happy to offer advise

You can eat crap and lose weight, that's a fact, if you are eating at deficit.

You can eat "healthy" foods and gain weight, also fact, it you eat surplus.

Just because someone eats junk and loses weight doesn't mean they are healthy or as healthy as they could be... You need to decide what your end goal is and relieve yourself of worrying about others... most of us go through stages- 1st it's about losing a few pounds and then it gradually moves towards a desire to eat better/healthier and then balancing healthy living and healthy eating to sustain a weight or bodyfat % goal.

Nothing is absolute and there will always be someone that can eat whatever and get away with it... I was never that person. ...lol

How? Because lots of healthy things have lots of calories. Things like brown rice, good bread, beans, cheese, whole milk . . .

Good stuff. Lots of calories. That's why whole cuisines are based on them.

When people say 'I can't eat my calories', I'm like, a piece of toast with butter and oj could be 500 calories.' It ain't hard to get calories up with healthy food.

I'm actually surprised how few calories some candy bars are. And how many calories are in anything from Panera. :)

I see some diaries here like that. And these people's intakes only end up like 1,200 calories at the end of the day. If you look at their portions, though, it'll be really low. Like a quarter cup of ice cream for dessert. Somehow, they managed to buck up and tame the urge to overeat on processed and fast foods.

I eat lots of junk *and* good foods and make my calorie goal most every day... I usually budget for at least one or two treats a day, like a "fun size" candy bar or a beer. Portion control plus adding lots of low calorie foods like fruits, veggies, and soups to my meals and snacks help me do it. I also workout enough so I can "afford" these treats, since I'm short and MFP puts me on 1280 net calories a day. Definitely couldn't survive on all junk but I feel like I've found a pretty good balance of healthy low calorie foods plus some "naughty" things thrown in the mix. :)

Good to know the Dairy Queen choco mint brownie Blizzard I shared at lunch today will pack back on 81#. biggrinno.gif

I eat the so-called "junk" food. I budget for it. Dessert after lunch and supper keep me from sticking a knife in peoples' chests.
