Hey guys! I would love to start doing some exercise videos through the winter months, but I'm on the second floor of my building and am afraid that too much jumping around would totally piss off my neighbors below me!
Have you guys found a solution to this? Is it courteous to knock on their door and let them know you'll be working out and they may hear some jumping around above them? Is it less noisy if you don't wear shoes (and is this even safe to do, anyway?)??
Just curious if anyone has any solutions?

In 2011, I started and did P90X despite being in an upstairs apartment. The only DVDs on that in which I really noticed any need to be cognizant of those below was on plyometrics, and even on that video, I was able to practice some pretty soft landing for most moves (I did jumping jacks during the 2-3 moves that would have been close to impossible to muffle).
You should be fine I think!0 -
Sounds very considerate to let your neighbors know what you're doing. I think that's fair, and get your workout it. Maybe there's a time of day that will be less disruptive for them. I've had neighbors who wouldn't have cared, and I had neighbors who complained when I dropped a case of soda that we were "partying all night long". So...hopefully you have the nice kind!0

Haha, I hope they are the nice kind also! I've never had to bother with them before. Thanks for the advice, both of you!
I guess I will give it a try and see how it goes! :-P

Yeah, if you can just reach out to your neighbors and let them know. Also landing softly makes a huge difference, and its nicer to your joints.0

Avoid odd hours or if you care a lot ask them what time they are not home to do your workouts.0

Go downstairs and offer a bribe to the people who live down there. My neighbors like beer and baked goods. But, whatever works. Also let them know approximate duration and promise to not do it during unreasonable hours. Pre 11AM on Weekends after 9PM on weekdays.

Haha! Bribes are a good idea! :-D0 -
Do you have to jump up and down to get in shape?
How about bodyweight exercises and dare I say it - Yoga?0 -

Well, my preferred form of workout is dancing stuff, like Zumba or Cardio Kickboxing, which unfortunately involves a good bit of jumping around. The music really keeps me motivated.
I do have a couple of yoga dvd's which I will occasionally do, but it doesn't torch calories nearly as well as a good cardio program. Thanks for the suggestion!

OK, see what you mean.
I do Insanity DVDs barefoot - makes me land gently and helps hold back soreness of muscles and is kinder on the joints. Maybe you could kick off your shoes!
edit: look up Power Yoga and try some. Youd be surprised how many calories you will torch! (but I admit I am a Yoga addict!)0 -
I live downstairs now and used to live upstairs. Loud noise from upstairs doesn't bother me unless it's before 5am or after 9:30pm. So talk to them if it will be before or after that time.0

Yeah, get timing right. Maybe you could get those interlocking foam tiles to absorb some of the sound/pressure (cover w a carpet when not in use).0

Power yoga is actually a solid workout for apartment dwellers. It's what I did inside after my neighbors called security one time while I was doing insanity0 -
An exercise mat may also help muffle the sound.
Talking to them is considerate and a great idea, who knows - you could end up with a new friend and workout buddy!0 -
